In fact, the more secondhand smoke you breathe, the greater your risk of serious health problems. Your lungs will be affected just by being near cigarette smoke. * Secondhand smoke - also called environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) - is a mixture of the smoke exhaled from a smoker's lungs and the smoke that comes from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar. * When you breathe secondhand smoke, you inhale the same dangerous chemicals that smokers inhale. These chemicals harm your air passages and lungs. Secondhand smoke causes lung cancer. * Each year, 3,000 non-smokers die from lung cancer caused by secondhand smoke. * 35,000 non-smokers die every year from heart disease caused by the poisonous chemicals in second- hand smoke (including carbon monoxide, nicotine and formaldehyde). Children who breathe secondhand smoke are more likely to have colds, bronchitis or asthma. * Children exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to develop asthma. * When you have asthma, secondhand smoke can trigger an attack. Protect your lungs and your family's lungs. * Try to avoid enclosed spaces where people • are smoking (including your car - even with the windows open). * Insist that other people, including babysitters, not smoke in your home or around your children. * Fans and open windows do not clear all the chemicals - you can still be affected by the smoke. * If smoking is allowed where you work, ask your employer to make your workplace smoke-free. Make sure that smokers only smoke outside of your home. * Set up a chair and ashtray outside and ask smokers not to smoke in the house. * If you live with someone who smokes, encourage him or her to quit. Is it impolite to ask someone not to smoke? * Smoking is a personal choice, but if someone smokes around you, then it affects you too. You deserve to breathe smoke-free air. * At a restaurant, club or party, try politely saying, "The smoke from your cigarette is making it hard for me (or my children) to breathe. Would you mind waiting until later to smoke ?" * Remember, you are protecting your health by asking someone not to smoke around you - or by leaving if they continue to smoke. Remember...., • Being around smoke can affect your lungs. • Secondhand smoke is especially dangerous for children's lungs. • Emphysema damages tiny air sacs in your lungs.
