RIVER DAM
T00!D II FORTNIGHT
The state division of water re-
sources wants to get moving m
195] on the giant Feather River
Project.
Involving the largest system of
flood control, water transporta-
tion and power development ever
conceived in California. the pro-
ject would cost $1,270,387,000.
As a starter, the officials want
the Legislature to appropriate
$800.000
A big 3,500,000 acre foot reser-
voir would be created the
proposed 71i.foot Oroville Dam on
the Feather. Water would be
transported .by a system of ca-
nals, conduits, tunnels and pump-
ing stations clear to San Diego
County.
The plan overshadows the Cen-
rtal Valley Project.
A. D. Edmonston. state engin-
eer. says the initial funds would
be spent as follows: Surveys and
plans for relocating the Western
Pacific Railroad. Feather River
Highway. Feather Falls Railroad
and county roads. $350,000: ex-
ploration of Oroville Dam and
afterbay cites. $100.000; topogra-
phic strip maps from Southern
Sa Joaquin Valley to the Mexi-
caorder. $150.000; negotiation
of ontracts and preparation cf
pla@s and specifications, $200,000.
The Legislature has authorized
the project but so far has put up
no cash. It is proposed to ac-
complish most of the financing
through revenue bonds.
Last fortnight State Public
Works Director Frank B. Dur-
kee observed:
"There is tremendous interest
in this project. Mr, Edmonston
was clear down in Escondido (San
Diego County) to address a meet-
ing the other day. There is more
interest there, in fact, than there
is up here. Mr. James Guthrie, a
member of the highway commis-
sion and a San Berardino pub-
lisher, tells me there is consider-
able interest in his counw, too:
The sooner we get started, the
better." --Forthnight Magazine
