Connie Turner, of Quincy, and her Dutch friend, Elite van Oppen, tour Geleen in the province of
Limburg, Netherlands, where they visited a monument erected to honor the 65 American men
who died there Sept. 15 - 20, 1944. They were members of the 2nd Armored Division, known as
"Hell on Wheels," and were securing riverbanks before invading Germany. Someone keeps
fresh flowers and a lit candle at the monument at all times.

Jack Boise, of Genesee and Oakland, is one of several SS Jeremiah O'Brien liberty ship
crewmembers who are volunteering on the USS Iowa, which is temporarily berthed in
Richmond. They are removing the rotten teak deck and doing a lot of chipping and painting,
getting the "Big Stick" ready for her move to San Pedro. He was excited to see Joe Knadler on
the front page of the Nov. 9 issue of the Indian Valley Record, in a photo taken during the
battleship's escape from the mothball fleet, Both the Iowa and O'Brien are World War II era
ships. Volunteers host several cruises each year on the liberty ship and may organize one for
the day the Iowa heads out under the Golden Gate.
