Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011 5B BLM co.mpletes. High Rock roundup The capture helicopter guides horses across the northwest Nevada landscape toward the capture trap. Photo submitted The Bureau of Land Man- agement completed rounding up excess wild horses from the High Rock Complex of herd management areas in northwest Nevada. In the roundup, 1,334 wild horses were gathered as part of the effort to return populations to sustainable levels. Bureau officials will con- duct an aerial population sur- vey within the next week to confirm the numbers of wild horses remaining on the range and will release some animals back onto the range to maintain the populations of 258 to 451 wild horses in the Bitner, Nut Mountain, Fox Hog, High Rock and Wall Canyon herd management ar- eas. Members of the public will be invited to observe these releases. Some post-gather popula- tion management, including bait trapping and removal of horses living outside of herd management areas, may be undertaken this winter. If the post-gather aerial population survey shows herd manage- ment areas to be over their appropriate management lev- els, the BLM could capture and remove some additional animals. The public will be notified of any additional ac- tions. Mares returned to the range will be treated with a fertility control drug to slow growth of the wild herds. "This was a large and chal- lenging project, and we are pleased to have completed it while accomplishing our ob- jectives of safety, humane treatment, public access and transparency," said Nancy Haug, BLM's Northern Cali- fornia district manager. "Achieving the appropriate management levels will help ensure that the rangelands re- main healthy along with wild horse herds, wildlife and per- mitted livestock." Wild horses removed from the range will be available for adoption at the BLM Litch- field Corrals near Susanville via the internet and at wild horse and burro adoption events in various locations across the nation beginning in January. Dates, locations and details will be an- nounced. Older wild horses will be housed in long-term pastures in the Midwest where they re- tain their wild status and pro- tection. Complete roundup statis- tics, including veterinary re- ports, are available online at blm .gov/ca/highrock. The BLM protects wild horses and burros and con- trols their populations under provisions of the Wild and Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act. The law recog- nizes the animals as "living symbols of the historic and pi- oneer spirit of the West," and requires that they be man- aged as part of a "thriving natural ecological balance on the range." The High R()ck Complex, managed by BLM-California's Surprise lield Office, is part of the Tri-State Coordination Area which involves the BLM's California. Nevada and Oregon state offices and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Sheldon- Hart Mountain wildlife refuges. The agencies are working together to improve management of wild and feral horses in northwest Nevada and southeastern Oregon. "We recognize that many people value our nation's wild horses and burros, and we share that appreciation," Haug said. "With completion of this project, wild horses and burros will enjoy healthy rangeland habitat or human care off the range." Lassen man publishes state wetlands book Frank Hall, retired Cali- fornia Department of Fish and Game Wildlife.Biol0gist and Lassen County resident for the last 28 years, has just completed a comprehensive history of California's wet- lands. Titled "They Came to Shoot -- A History of Cali- fornia Duck Clubs and Wet- land Conservation,." the 500- page book includes a chapter for each of the state's wet- land areas which were pre- viously published in "Cali- fornia Waterfowl," the maga- zine of California Waterfowl Association, a non-profit conservation organization. Entirely funded by grants and donors, the book was completed by Hall after more than three years of research. The basic history of over 3,000 duck clubs, both his- toric and currently active, is included as detailed listings at the end of each chapter. A CD with 12 historic and mod- ern maps is also included with the book. More than 100 black and white historic photographs and 72 color photos are displayed. The book printing was limited to 500 copies. The book is a comprehen- sive look at historical water- fowl hunting and habitat in California. It is divided into 14 chapters which cover each of the state's major wet- land regions. Additional chapters pro- vide a look at some historic vessels used in duck hunting on San Francisco Bay, Su- isun Marsh and the Sacra- mento-San Joaquin Delta. The book shows how tens of thousands of acres of coastal wetlands and hun- dreds of duck clubs were obliterated from coastal Los Angeles and Orange County as Well as the San Francisco Bay Area, why some marsh- es were protected from devel- opment, and the role of duck clubs in the preservation of wetlands through the critical 1920s and 1930s, before public funding for the conservation of California's ma;shes. Meticulously researched, filled with data on historic duck clubs, and illustrated with historic hunting scenes, "They Came to Shoot" fills a 10ng-needed niche in the history, of Cali- fornia's marshes. A book signing by the au- thor will be held at Margie's Book Nook in Uptown Su- sanville from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10.
