CHUCK NORRIS

Q: Mr. Norris, it seems I ac-
tually do relatively well with
my diet and exercise until the
holiday season approaches.
Then it all goes to honey-
baked hams in a hand basket.
Do you have any advice?
--"Tried and Tempted" On-
tario, Calif.
A: The mere mention of
Thanksgiving makes our
glands salivate. We anticipate
the smells and tastes for days
and sometimes weeks ahead
of time. It's the all-American,
eating frenzy holiday --
Thanksgiving -- one of Amer-
ica's favorite pastimes.
Let's hear it for those pre-
game chips, dips and hors
d'oeuvres! Who can resist
those fluffy, cloud-like
mashed potatoes cascading
with butter, or fresh-out-of-
the-oven turkey dressing that
virtually melts ix/your
mouth? Green bean casseroles
and candied yams are a/nust,
right? And don't you have to
top it all off with that apple or
pecan pie, mounted with a
truckload of ice cream? And
let's not forget those joyous
post-Thanksgiving days of eat-
ing leftovers that even rival
the fresh-baked cuisine.
This reminds me of a hilari-
ous thought by the renowned
humorist and columnist Erma
Bombeck. She spoke for many
Americans when she wrote:
"What we're really talking
about is a wonderful day set
aside on the fourth Thursday
of November when no one di-
ets. I mean, why else would
they call it Thanksgiving?"
I, above all health and fit-
ness trainers, don't want to
spoil anyone's Thanksgiving
festivities. And it's no mystery
when I write: The truth is that
most of us overindulge during
the holidays. According to
ABC News Health, the average
American gains up to seven
pounds between Thanksgiving
and New Year's Day.
Health Management Re-
sources, a national weight loss
organization, reports that an
estimated 50 percent of Ameri-
cans ditch thoughts of diet and
exercise during November and
postpone them until January.

Continuing the Story About Root Canals
(Part 3)
Continuing the story on root canal treatment, or Endodontics, I will now address
a very important part of this treatment: MAGNIFICATION. Magnification is an
absolute necessity in order to provide excellence in endodontic treatment. To my
knowledge, more than 99% of endodontic specialists use high magnification in
every tooth they treat for the reason that without magnification one simply cannot
visualize the minute details required to find all openings to all of the canal systems
or see down into them during treatment. Further, I am not sure that in today's world
that excellence in dentistry can be routinely accomplished without magnification no
matter what you are examining, treating, or whatever procedure you are doing.
Why? Simply because a dentist cannot see all the details needed with the naked
eye. But in endodontics magnification is essential in order to provide excellence in
care and if excellence is not provided, the risk of eventual failure is raised. In our
office, we use magnification for everything we do and I have done this since 1984.
When we open a tooth for this treatment we are looking for tiny openings to the
canals, openings to be found in the pulp chamber (the area inside the tooth that
leads to the canals). Over 98% of upper first molars and 80% of upper second
molars, for example, have a tiny hidden canal that before magnification was rarely
t
, found. Leaving this canal untreated results in lingering discomfort after treatment.
i Some patients have this lingering discomfort for years finally showing tip as a
recurrent abscess. With magnification, these small canals can be found and treated
successfully rendering complete treatment and thus a comfortable tooth. There are
patterns within the pulp chamber that lead us to locating these small canals but to
see these routinely with the naked eye is almost impossible. Essentially no
endodontic specialist treats patients without magnification as stated above. There-
fore it is easy to interpolate that if you need a root canal, make sure magnification
is used during treatment. Cheaply done dentistry and long lasting successful
dentistry usually do not go hand in hand. Protect your investment by having good
quality treatment the first time.
So, lets recap what good endodontic treatment entails, what we have discussed so
far:
Magnification from examination through all treatment.
Current endodontic training to understand and implement evidence based treatment
methods, materials, and instruments.
Understanding of root canal systems and what this means in disinfecting,
removing dead or dying tissue, and cleaning them thoroughly.
Instrumenting the openings to the entire root canal system large enough and
sufficient to allow the introduction of chelating materials throughout.
Agitating these materials sufficient to make sure currents are produced within this
fluid so it can flow to all areas of the canal systems.

Say goodbye to holiday stress
Take time for yourseff-. Dur-

yourself time to recharge.
Take a nap, listen to music or
simply sneak off to a quiet
room in the house to clear
your mind.
Be thankful. Feeling
stressed or tired? Find your-

to think about or write down
the things you're thankful for,
big or small. Being grateful
can decrease stress, boost the
immune system and improve
sleep patterns.
Share the load. There's no
reason only one person should
plan, cook and entertain. If
guests offer to prepare a dish,
let them bring it to your
Thanksgiving celebration. Also,
have the kids help with house-
