Whooping cough
Do only kids get whooping
cough? No. Adults can get
whooping cough too. This dis-
ease is also vaccine-pre-
ventable, and it is up to those
who are able to get the vaccine
to become the first line of de-
fense against whopping cough.
Preventing pertussis in
adults and children through
vaccination will protect
young infants who do not yet
have full protection from their
vaccines and are also the most
at risk for serious illness and
death. Early signs of pertussis
include cold-like symptoms:
.runny nose, sneezing, mild or
no fever, and cough. The
severity of the cough gradual-
ly increases and can continue
for several weeks or months.
The "whoop" sound often as-
sociated with the pertussis
cough varies. Adults may ex-
perience sweating and/or
episodes of a choking sensa-
tion. Pertussis can be a very
serious illness, especially for
Young infants. It can lead to
breathing problems, pneumo-
nia and swelling of the brain
(encephalopathy), which can
result in seizures and brain
damage. Pertussis can be fatal,
especially when it occurs in
infants under 4 months of age.
To make an appointment for
oneor all of the vaccinations,

Health Agency at 283-6330.

California State Assembly-
man Dan Logue will be travel-
ing to Chester tonight, Nov.
16, to host a townhall meeting.
The meeting will begin at 6
p.m. in the Almanor Recre-
ation Center, which is located
at ii50 Meadowbrook Loop,
one block west of Main Street.
The topics he ~ill address
include the effect of the re-
alignment issue on law en-
forcement and the six bills that
were signed this year that are
pro jobs and law enforcement.
He also plans to talk about
a number of "bad bills" that
have been passed by the state
Legislature.
• Logne will also offer his con-
-stituents a "state of the state"
update and plans time for a
question and answer session.
Pril r to his Nov. 16 visit
Logu~will be meeting with a
team from the governor's of-
fice and representatives from
the timber industry.
"The purpose of the meet-
ing is to bring about a means
to shorten the timber hgrvest
permit process so we can get
people back to work in the
Sierras," Logue said.
He said his constituents at
the Chester meeting would be
among the first to learn the
results of that meeting.
He said his townhall meet-
ings not only let community
members hear about the state
of affairs in Sacramento, they
also provide people a chance
to speak up on the issues that
matter most to them.
"It's important for people to
be able to connect with their
state legislators and give their
own feedback," said Logue.
