Johnsvilie Junior Ski Team third-graders enjoy the view at Alpine Meadows during afternoon
free ski following a race last year. The team will hold sign-ups next week for its annual county-
wide program, which offers local families an affordable and fun way to learn ski racing at Lake
Tahoe-area resorts. Photo by Suzi Brakken

ents who want to get out on
the slopes this winter.
The ski team open to
first- through eighth-grqders

affordable opportunity for
learning and improving ski-
ing ability, while sharing the
camaraderie of friends and
family. This popular pro-
gram also provides local fam-
ilies a way to get outside
more in the winter and take
in the beautiful mountain
surroundings.
Sign-ups for the team are
under way next month via
the Central Plumas Recre-
ation and Park District. Reg-

"This is one of those great
winter sports where boys
and girls can develop and ap-
ply ski racing skills in a very
supportive team environ-
ment we welcome all age
appropriate youth at just
about any skill level," said
Recreation and Park District
General Manager Jim
Boland.
The Johnsville Junior Ski
Team was formed in the late
1980s as part of the statewide
Buddy Werner Ski Racing
program. Volunteer parents,
local sponsors, teachers and
civic-minded residents all
joined to make the team one
of the most successful pro-
grams in the state, according
to Boland.
Ski program co-directors
Mike Wood and Tanya Mey-
er and coaches, after,evaluat-
ing skills of new skiers, will
draft each of them to one of
the six teams, striving to en-
sure a fair age and skill bal-
ance between the groups.
During the regular ski sea-
son the teams race against
each other in friendly compe-
tition over select weekends
in January, February and
March. The ski-racing sea-
son culminates in late March
with the Buddy Werner

Volunteer coaches work
with the kids in the morning
and race heats are held until
about noon. After lunch, par-
ents are encouraged to ski
with their kids for the rest of
the day. Discount ski tickets
are available for both racers
and parents.
To participate in the junior
ski program, youth must
own or have access to skis,
boots and poles, warm win-
ter jacket, gloves, goggles,
sunglasses, safety helmet
and warm hat. Additionally,
skiers must be able to
demonstrate the capacity to
put on and take off their skis,
as well ag the ability to make
basic turns and stop within a
reasonable distance. For
youth that have the desire
but not quite sufficient
skills, the ski team offers the
opportunity to participate on
the Development Team.
While on the Development
Team, skiers will acquire the
necessary skills at their own
pace, eventually graduating
to a racing team when they
are ready.
During early years the ju-
nior ski team both trained
and raced at the Johnsville
Ski Hill.
With the Johnsville Ski
Hill operations experiencing
a temporary hiatus due to
the need for upgraded equip-
ment and improved access
although "new" chairlift
equipment recently was ac-
quired from the Squaw Val-
ley Resort -- the junior ski
team currently practices and
races at ski resorts near
Lake Tahoe.
"We remain hopeful that
sufficient grant and other
funds can be secured to re-
store the Johnsville Ski Hill
for future operations,"
Boland added.
There currently are volun-
teer positions open on both
the racing teams (coach or
.assistant coach) and the De-
velopment Team. Limited
registration or race scholar-
ships may be available.
Registrations for the
Johnsville Junior Ski Team
will continue to be accepted
by theCentral Plumas Recre-
ation and Park District, 34
Fairground Road in Quincy
through Dec. 17. For more in-
formation regarding partici-
pation on the team or to dis-
cuss a possible coaching po-
sition contact Jim Boland at
