The Quincy High School
boys' soccer team captured
the section championship
with a 3-1 victory in the title
match against Tulelake Sat-
urday, Oct. 29.
Two days earlier, the top-
seeded Quincy Trojans elimi-
nated Redding Christian in a
semifinal match, also by a
score of 3-1.
Quincy completed its sea-
son with an overall record of
19-5-2.
"It's been an incredible
season for us," said first-year
head coach Tanner Johns.
"We've been dominant pretty
much the whole year. I'm re-
ally proud of this team."
With nine seniors and
eight freshmen on the team,
Johns" explained how the old-
er players :helped the
younger players come along.
Besides winning the cham-
pionship, Johns said he is
most proud of the fact that
none of his players drew a
single yellow card all season.
This was in stark contrast
to Tulelake, which had three
players receive yellow cards
in Saturday's championship
match.
The game opened with
three early scoring attacks
by Tulelake, but then Quincy
quickly turned the tables and
scored two goals within the
first 10 minutes of the match.
Dante Knowles put in the
Trojans' first goal, and
Justin Lusk delivered the
second goal. Dale Morgan
and Luis Rubalcava-Cunan
-were credited witli the as-
sists.
After leading 2-0 at half-
time, the Trojans struck
again 10 minutes into the sec-
ond half with a goal by Dale
Morgan off an excellent cross
from Che Rubalcava-Cunan.
Tulelake scored its lone
goal late in the game.
Henry Dillingham led the
Trojans with seven steals,
followed by Kyle Morgan and
Ethan Skemp with five each
and Lusk and Viet Tran with
four apiece. Keeper Garrett
Hagwood made five saves.
In Quincy's semifinal
match against Redding
Christian last Thursday, the
Trojans fell behind 1-0 early
in the game, but then Lusk
connected with Dale Morgan
for the tying goal, making
the score 1-1 at halftime.
Approximately 10 minutes
into the second half, Lusk
scored off a pass from Luis
Rubalcava-Cunan to give
Quincy the lead.
The Trojans' final goal was
• scored by Luis Rubalcava-
Cunan off a corner kick by
Lusk.
Hagwood captured seven
saves in the game, and
Dillingham nabbed nine
steals.

The Chester High School
girls' soccer team reached its
full potential in its champi-
onship match against Portola
last Saturday night, when the
Volcanoes earned a 6-0 victo-
ry for the league title.
• "They probably played
their best game that night as
ateam," said Chester coach
Eric O'Kelley. "The girls
were ready. It was a good
way to finish the season."
Chester's Miranda Lemons
scored four goals in the
match, and McKenna Taylor
scored twice.
Three of Lemons' goals
came in the first period, giv-
ing Chester a 3-0 lead at half-
time.
In the second half, Taylor
converted on a penalty kick
and then powered a shot past
the Portola keeper. Lemons
landed one final goal before
being substituted out.
As prolific as the Volca-
noes' offense was, Chester de-
fense was Just as formidable,
allowing the Tigers very few
scoring opportunities.
"The defense was really
phenomenal," said O'Kelley.
Chester earned seven
shutouts this season, conced-
ing just one ,goal while scor-
ing 32.
O'Kelley described stopper
Emma LeSeur as anchoring
the defense, and also named
right fullback Kelsey Wilkin-
son, left •fullback Samantha
Marrs, sweeper Emily Mon-
day and keeper Emily La-
Groue as Chester's other sol-
id players in back.
The Volcanoes had six
newer players on this year's
team.
"It's neat to see kids grow
in confidence," said O'Kelley.
"When they have a challenge
and rise to the occasion, they
learn that they have some-
thing more than they know."
Chester had just one senior
on this year's squad, so al-
most all the players will be
returning next season.
