CI-IP REPORT Golf cart collision, Oct. 25 Juan Romero, 18, of Porto- la, was driving a 2000 Dodge Durango westbound from the Portola High School football field at approximately 4:20 p.m. As he approached the school, according to the Cali- fornia Highway Patrol re- port, he was having a hard time seeing what was in front of him due to the sun shining through his windshield. At this time Christopher Sher- rard, 38, of Portola, was dri- ving the school's golf cart north along the east side of the high school, just south of the Du'rango. Sherrard began making a right turn to go down to the football field, at which time he saw Romero making a left turn in his direction. Sher- rard applied the brakes and swerved to the far right side of the corner to avoid a colli- sion. Romero did not see the golf cart due to the heavy sunlight and continued mak- ing a left turn directly to ward Sherrard, causingthe left front bumper of the Du- rango to collide with the left front corner of the golf cart. Sherrard reported minor pain from the collision. Shortly after the ac- cident, the Susanville Cali- fornia Highway Patrol Com- munications Center received a call of a traffic collision with property damage only. An officer was dispatched to the scene and the collision remains under investigation. Fire Safe Council offers winter home safety tips Members of the Plumas County Fire Safe Council cor- dially invite citizens to partic- ipate in their regularly sched- uled monthly meeting Thurs- day, Nov. 10, at the Plumas County Planning and Build- ing Services office from 9 to 11 a.m. The office is located at 555 Main St. in Quincy. At the November meeting the council will discuss wild- fire mitigation activities that provide for wildfire educa- tion, fire planning, haz- ardous fuel reduction and implementation of the Com- munity Wildfire Protection Plan. Fire Safe Council members remind Plumas County resi- dents that, with the coming of winter and the threat of wild- fire diminished, now is a good time to make sure the inside of homes are firesafe. Following these simple tips, says Mike DeLasaux, council chairman, can help ensure homeowners' safety this winter. --Furnaces and flues should be cleaned and checked. --Smoke alarms should be in every bedroom and on every level of the home with fresh batteries and checked monthly. --If propane appliances are present, carbon monoxide de- tectors should be installed. " --Portable heaters should be used sparingly and not be used with extension cords. Never u6-fibarbecue to heat a home; tiey produce carbon monoxide that can kill. Keep anything that can burn, such as paper, bedding and furniture, at least three feet away from heating equipment and have a three- foot "kid-free zone" around stoves, fireplaces and space heaters. Candles should be out of reach of children and in safe secure locations. The Plumas County Fire Safe Council is a coalition of citizens, businesses and rep- resentatives from local, state and federal government agencies that share a com- mon interest in preventing loss of life and minimizing loss of property from wild- land fires. The mission of the Fire Safe Council is: "To re- duce the loss of natural and ' manmade resources caused! . by wildfire through pre-fire activities."
