Anglican cilurch begins services in Basin
Some may be wondering,
"Why another church in
Chester?" "It's a question I've
received a handful of times,"
said Father Brian Foos,
the priest of the new St.
Andrew's Church, "and it
is a good one. Our little town
of Chester has a number of
churches -- more than
enough, one might think, for
a town this size."
Foos, a Chester native, has
spent the last dozen years
working to build St. Andrew's
Academy, a classical Angli-
can K - 12 college prepara-
tory school.
He explains, "The classic,
historic Anglican Church
is not represented in the
Almanor Basin at all. We
have many churches coming
It was time for a classical
Anglican church in Chester;
and we are very pleased with
our new location!"
What exactly is "Angli-
can"?
The Anglican Church is
simply the Christian church
in the British Isles, planted
from the Baptistic tradition; as early as the second century,
we have one from the Roman and probably earlier, which
tradition. There are no grew and took hold there, and
Eastern Orthodox, Reformed then dispersed over much of
or Anglican congregations, the world.
The name "Anglican"
comes from the Latin for
"English": Anglicana.
The Anglican church
worldwide is about 80 million
strong, making it the third
largest Christian communion
in the world.
The church has priests,
bishops and deacons, as
do the Roman and Eastern
Orthodox churches.
Though it is Western in its
history and custom, it also
shares much with Eastern
churches. That influence
came early in the first two or
three centuries, and again
later during the English
Reformation.
Visitors are always
welcome. The church is at

Farmhouse
burns to
the cellar

No one called "Fire!" until
the flames had engulfed the
house at 79393 Brae Gate
Road in River Valley Estates.
On that morning, Oct. 8,
Leslie Furnas and Jerry
DeVote, owners of the 1894
home, were away for the
night, and thus are safe
and sound. But they lost
everything.
Neighbor Ralph. Taylor
called in the fire at about
6 a.m. Carol Murray, of
Portola, knew how to locate
their daughter, who called
the owners, DeVore and
Furnas.
"We lost everything," said
Furnas -- even their three
cats, who died of smoke
inhalation. The house had
appropriate smoke detectors
but the warning did not
disturb the cats.
"If we'd been there we
might have died."
Firefighters had to return
to the burned-out structure
later Saturday when in-
vestigators of the fire's
source noticed flames had
re-emerged from the coals.
Arson has been ruled out,
but the cause of the fire is
still under investigation.
The siding of the old farm-
house, being made of original
true 1-inch boards, does not
appear badly burned on the
south face. But the rear half
of the 19th-century building
was burned out from the
basement through to the sky.
A wooden fence five feet
away was charred.
Two front rooms in the
old house were only invaded
by smoke and intense heat.
In the bedroom, the TV
was unrecognizable. It had
become a melted blob next to
the melted radio. The metal
roof is twisted and rippled.
This house is well known:
It originally stood in Sierra
Valley and was moved to the
Old Carmichael Ranch on the
Beckwourth Genesee Road. It
was moved again in the 1990s
to the Brae Gate Road site
where DeVore and Furnas
had been refurbishing it.
