More Homecoming hijinks
Homecoming royalty candidates, above, receive a hilarious lesson in the rigors of makeup
application during the rally. At right, Coach Misty Banchio introduces the new Greenville Junior-
Senior High School rodeo team, including Farris Smith, Hannah Lambach, Shasta Banchio, Tanner

Local teens excel in 2011 Forestry Challenge
Greenville High School stu-
dents earnedfourth place Oct.
15 in the 2011 Shasta Forestry
Challenge at Lassen Pines
Camp near Shingletown.
There were a total of 12
teams from seven schools in
the four-day challenge.
The Greenville team was an
experienced one, composed of
seniors Geoffrey Guthrie, Ju-
lia Kusel and Tucker Willits.
The competition was very
tight this year, teacher Travis
Rubke said.
There were only eight points
separating first place from
fourth.
"They did an excellent job of
developing a solution to this
year's Forestry Challenge prob-
lem and did an outstanding job
of presenting their solution to
the judges," Rubke said.
The team also earned third
in the pacing contest, which
is held each year as part of
the challenge.
One of the highlights for the
students this year was the op-
P0rtunity to learn about forest
management planning and to
create a long-range plan for a
160-acre privately owned parcel
near the Lassen National Forest.
After spending a day visit-
ing the site to collect field data
and interact with natural re-
source professionals, students
weighed in on some key is-
sues, including timber produc-
tion, watercourse protection,
biodiversity and wildfire risk.
During the challenge, teams
of students also completed
field trainihg, followed by a
field test, to assess their tech-
nical forestry knowledge and
data collecting skills.
"Bringing students to the
forest to learn from working
professionals makes the infor-
mation real and applicable,"
said one of the teachers pre-
sent. "Students that partici-
pate keep the information and
memories forever."
"The Forestry Challenge has
allowed me to experience and
learn about something I would
normally never h.ave the op-
tion of doing," said a student.
"They have been a great
team," Rubke said of Guthrie,
Kusel and Willits. "I will miss
working with them next year,
and my challenge now will be
to work on putting together a
team for next year."
