What is Aquatic
Physical Therapy?
Plumas Physical Therapy is the only facility in
Plumas County to offer aquatic physical therapy
to our patients. Aquatic therapy will help restore
optimal function and recovery from an injury or
illness. American Physical Therapy Association
website defines aquatic therapy as, "the evidence-
based and skilled practice of physical therapy
in an aquatic environment by a physical therapist
or physical therapy assistant. Aquatic physical
therapy includes, but is not limited to, treatment,
rehabilitation, prevention, health, wellness and
fitness of patient/client populations in an aquatic
environment with or without the use of assistive,
adaptive, orthotic, or supportive devices and
equipment."
Aquatic physical therapy has been clinically
and scientifically proven to 'be an effective treat-
ment for many musculoskeletal, neurological,
cardiopulmonary, and immunological disorders.
Typical problems and conditions that can be
treated effectively include injuries to the neck,
shoulder, low back, knee, ankle,-chronic pain,
arthritis.and fribromyalgia. Post-operative patients
who had low back surgery, hip/knee/ankle
surgeries, including replacements, may also
benefit from aquatic therapy as well. Aquatic
therapy can address many of the problems
commonly associated with musculoskelctal
injury including pain, decreased range, of motion,
reduced strength, reduced functional mobility,
decreased weight bearing and deconditioning.
The physical properties of water include
buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, and viscosity. These
provide a therapeutic environment that cannot
always be achieved with land-based exercises.
The warm water will promote muscle relaxation,
facilitate stretching, and reduce the sensation of
pain. Aquatic therapy is a safe environment for in-
juries and conditions in all stages of rehabilitation.
Performing exercise in an aquatic environment is
very effective to progress a patient's strengthening,
weight-bearing, conditioning, endurance, range of
motion, gait, and balance.
At Plumas Physical Therapy, our pool has a depth
of four feet with steps on each side to adjust the
weight-bearing status. The pool temperature is
ninety-two .degrees warm. We also have a hydraulic
chair lift to help patients get in and out of the pool,
if necessary. Our pool is,considered an "endless
pool" as it has a current that goes up to six miles
per hour. We have a variety of pool accessories
including, noodles, dumbbells, flotation belt,
kickboards and webbed gloves to progress the
therapeutic exercises. When you begin aquatic
physical therapy I will give you specific exercises to
you depending on your musculoskeletal problem.
So how do you know if aquatic therapy is
something that you can benefit from? Give me a
call or speak with your physician, to see if aquatic
physical therapy is right for you. If you are looking
to improve your overall function then maybe
aquatic physical therapy is for you. Can you
imagine living with less pain and less pain
medicine? Then I would recommend speaking with
your physician about the possibility of referring you
to Plumas Physical Therapy to start aquatic therapy.
Most insurance companies will cover aquatic
therapy. If you have any further questions regard-
ing what aquatic physical therapy is, give me a call
at 283-2202.
