American public and the affairs of
the Federal Government as those
created by the President's sur-
prmmg new executive order---
which in effect confers absolute

civilian agencies under the Execu-
tive lranch.
It is one thing for the State
, and Defense departments to with-
hold from the press information
that might be, in the President's
words, "harmful to the security of
the United States." It is quite dan-
gerously another thing to grant
to the Secretaries of Agriculture,
of the Interior, of Labor, of Com-
merce the right to withhold from
the people any information of any
kind which they may choose to
withhold.

ville, advises that he has been

He also said he had been on a
visit to Bryce Bogue at Camp
Keeh-r. and says Bryce is fine and
h,s added some weight on his
frame.

all citizens in their sovereignty as
a helf-governing people.
They have had this sort of con-
trol setup in Russia for a long
time now. The American people
do not want it here!
Whether it's an effort to remove
Harry Truman from among the
"special privilege" boys to which
he so fondly refers on frequent
occasion, or otherwise, it's hard
to say, but the suggestion has
been made that the president's
salary be raised to $500.000 a year,
and be taxable. This step, statis-
ticians advise, would be abot|t the
same as the present provision for
$100,000 a year plus $50,000 non-
taxable expense money. Looking
at this comparison one might well
feel the urge to follow out the
suggestion of the Hoover Com-
mission and take some steps to
reduce the tax program.
I believe it can be done!
And speaking of the tax pro-
gram. one might do well to take
into consideration the report that
12 van loads of furniture---costing
$68,000 have been procured for
the new office of the Governor,
to be established in the new wing
of the State Capitol.
Of Course. presidents and gov-
ernors can hardly be expected to
maintain the level we expect of
our preachers, but I sometimes
wonder if they know what a htlrd-
earned dollar can mean to the
pick-and-shovel operator who sup
plies about 94 percent of such!
'The Government of the United
States shall not engage in any
business, professional, commercial
or industrial enterprise in compe-
tition with its citizens except as
specified in the Constitution."
That's t h e proposed 23rd
Amendment to the Constitution of
the United States. It sounds sim-
ple, logical and desirable and
almost unnecessary. But, accord-
ing to its sponsor, the American
Progress Foundation, the measure
is desperately necessary.
Publishers who have known
about it, and taxpayers who
haven't known about it, should
be particularly sympathetic with
the proposal, since for years the
government has been supplying en-
velopes below cost in competition
to the printing fraternity.
