Maxine Maddalena She was preceded in death by Roll Smith, Bruno Maddalena, Ed Cook and daughter Paula Rae Smith Martin. She is survived by her son Roland Smith; her daughter Mary Maddalena Troutt; and many grandchildren, great- grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. Graveside inurnment will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. at Whispering Pines Cemetery on Highway 70, east of Portola. A memorial celebration of Maxine's life will be held at Calpine Elks Lodge at 1 p.m. at 71292 Highway 70, west of Portola. Memorial contributions can be made to the Calpine Elks Lodge (P.O. Box 1466, Graeagle, CA 96103) or to a charity of choice. Maxine Maddalena, age 90, died Sept. 30, 2011, with her family at her side. Maxine was born in Franklin, Ind., in 1921 and was raised in Southern Cali- fornia. She moved to Plumas County in 1942. Maxine had many jobs during her life, in- cluding "Rosie the Riveter" during WWII and many years at Joy's Hardware. After over 30 years as a bookkeeper at Beckwourth Airport, she begrudgingly retired at age 87.
