Ruth Coronel Styer
Ruth Coronel Styer, 91,
passed away after a short ill-
ness at her loving daughter
Rebecca and son-in-law Bob
Geiger's home in Banks,
Ore., on Sept. 9, 2011.
Born in Alhambra, Calif.,
to fruit purveyor Francisco
(Frank) M. Coronel and
wife Mary C. Brandon in
1920, Ruth exemplified to her
family and all the true mean-
ing of " life-long learning."
Starting when she was a
teenager, due to her mother's
poor health, Ruth took care
of the household including
raising,her brother Robert A.
Coronel, 12 years younger,
while she completed high
school and entered Pasadena
Junior College. She obtained
her associate degree from
Pasadena JC as the war years
started.
She quickly turned to
supporting the war effort
by working at Lockheed-Vega
in Long Beach on the air-
craft assembly line riveting
fuselages. Yes, she was an
honest-to-goodness "Rosie the
Riveter." Countless times,
while on the assembly line,
she pointed out possible im-
provements for which she
was rewarded with bonuses.
Possibly in an effort to save
money, they moved her to
the engineering department

where they would not have to
pay her bonuses for her
efforts. In the engineering
department she reviewed and
signed engineering drawings.
She would take leave from
work from time to time to
care for her ailing mother
and younger brother. Her
experiences would take her
through the Lockheed-Vega,
Consolidated-Valtee and
Douglas aircraft companies.
When her mother died, she
then began her pre-med and
biochemistry studies at Cal
(UC Berkeley), where she met
James, who was also a pre-
med student, at a Newman
Club dance. She continually
battled roadblocks in her
desire to become a doctor,
being continually told that
women should pursue nurs-
ing. At the end of the
war, James proposed to her
and she once again placed
her studies on hold while
she supported his quest to
become a doctor.
This included moving
to Milwaukee, Wis., where
James completed medical
school at Marquette Univer-
sity and they started their
family. They returned to the
Pasadena area to complete

No Cut, No Sew, No Fear!
Periodontal Bone Regeneration with an Nd:YAG
LANAP¢ Protocol
R.A.Yukna, University of Colorado, Colorado, USA
Laser and
Objective: The purpose of this presentation is to illustrate the radiographic
and histologic bone regeneration seen following the Laser-Assisted
New Attachment ProcedureTM (LANAP®) surgery using an Nd:YAG laser
(PerioLase® MVP-7TM) (Millennium Dental Technologies, Inc, Cerritos, CA)
in humans. LANAP® is a single session surgical treatment.
Methods: Pre-treatment and post-treatment dental radiographs of patients
treated for chronic periodontitis or peri-implantitis with the LANAP® Protocol
(Laser-Assisted New Attachment ProcedureTM) surgery are presented.
Results: Consistent increase in bone support for both natural teeth
(infrabony defects and furcations) and dental implants with peri-implantitis
has been seen with the LANAP® surgical protocol. The cases shown illus-
trate various examples of periodontal and peri-implant bone regeneration.
Human histology reinforces the radiographic findings,
Conclusions: The LANAP® Protocol (Laser-Assisted New Attachment
TM
Procedure ) surgery using an Nd:YAG laser shows appreciable potential
for periodontal and peri-implant bone regeneration.

James' medical residency. In
1951 they moved to Green-
ville, where Ruth focused on
raising their children until
the younger ones were in
high school. Then she started
working• in her husband's
medical practice as an assis-
tant and office manager.
Once the last of her chil-
dren had left the nest, she
started attending Lassen
Commumty College and
obtained her LVN license.
While obtaining her LVN and
afterward, she worked at
Feather River Hospital in
Greenville. Wanting to con-
tinue her education, she be-
gan classes at Butte College
in Paradise. She worked at
Feather River and Oroville
hospitals while pursing her
studies. She obtained her RN
in 1986 and worked approxi-
mately 14 years at Oroville
Hospital, stopping only when
it became too painful due to
varicose veins.
Her mind was always
sharp. This is due to the
fact that she was never seen
without a book. She was
constantly on the go and
loved walking the woods
around Greenville in search
of antique bottles and mush-
rooms.
Ruth was preceded in death
by brothers Frank R. and
Robert A. Coronel, daughter
Maria Elena, sons James
Robert and William Francis,
and husband James Charles
Styer. In addition to Rebecca,
she is survived by John and
Mitzi Styer, Joseph and
Kathy Styer, and Daniel and
Martha Styer. She has 13
grandchildren and many
great-grandchildren. She
truly leads us by her example
that if you desire it, there is
nothing that can get between
you and an education.
