Feather River soccer teams roll past Yuba
Feather River College
men's and women's soccer
teams have come off of a
stretch of 11 matches in 21
days and both have fared
very well, considering such
a daunting task.
The men's team is 8-2-2,
with their only losses com-
ing against the top teams in
the state. The men lost to
No. 6 American River, 2-1,
and to No. 9 ranked West
Hills, 4-1.
The last loss was Wednes-
day, Sept. 21, at the end of
playing four games in five
days, a task most soccer ex-
perts will tell you is almost
impossible.
"We are very proud of our
men and women," said FRC
coach Don Williams. "I
hated to ask them to play so
many matches in so few
days, but the California bud-
g.et crisis has made travel
budgets tight, so we have to
play back-to-back matches
as we travel on the road,
more than we would like
to."
The first home match of
the year was a doubleheader
with the men and women
Tuesday, Sept. 20, against
¥uba College.
With near 100 in atten-
dance, the FRC men and
women put on quite a show.
Women
The women (3-5-3) played
first and ended up beating
Yuba, 3-1.
Freshman Shelby Moore
opened the scoring in the
10th minute with a shot
from 16 yards out into the
uppeVcorner of the net, on
an assist from Alesha Stof-
fel. Yuba roared back 10
minutes later by beating
FRC freshman keeper Korey
Cline with a well-placed
chip shot from 24 yards out.
Cline would have no more
of it, and later added three
more saves to protect the
FRC net.
The Lady Eagles would
not be denied a home win.
Freshman winger Naomi
Feltham from London, Eng-
land, made her presence
known by slotting home a
pass from Melissa
Kalbleisch.
Freshman Alyssa Parada
finished the Eagles' scoring
in the 41st minute off of a
Grace Pedroza assist.
Men
Following the women's
. game, the FRC men shutout
Yuba 3-0.
The FRC men turned
heads in their first game of
the season with a 1-1 draw
against Fresno City College,
ranked fifth in the nation.
After Sustaining their first
loss of the season to Ameri-
can River College, the FRC
men registered an eight-
game winning streak, in-
cluding a 6-0 dismantling of
Yuba College 10 days earlier.
Tuesday's match was not
as easy, as Yuba put up a
good fight.
Las Vegas freshman Mar-
co Palacios opened the scor-
ing in the 19th minute on an
assist by freshman Abel Is-
las.
The second goal came on a
free kick by Argentinian
freshman Matias Salto in
the 30th minute of the
match. Rounding out the
scoring for the Golden Ea.
gles was Palacios again off
of an assist by Salto in the
40th minute.
Sophomore keeper Antony
Wakeford from Isle of
Wight, England, preserved
the shutout with one save in
the match.
The FRC men and women
will host Shasta College Oct.
4 in their second home
match of the year.
