Douglas Portola Respectful comment Thanks to Andy Johnston for respectfully commenting on my letter. My letters of Aug.' 31 and Sept. 7 described the history of positive results of supply-side economics, and Keynesian poor results. Andy did not dispute that, but he is correct I did not comment on why Democrats came to trust government more than Republicans. I will here. First I will add that the 300-word limit on letters does not allow complete analysis of one topic, let alone related topics. The desire to tax corpora- tions and "the rich" more to fuel bigger government and redistribute wealth traces back to Karl Marx. Main St., Quincy • Crowns in oneday • Safe, proven IV sedation • Latest technology reduces discomfort, improves aesthetics ly clothing, usable and mini- mal. A closetful of clothing that doesn't fit isn't useful and neither are libraries full of laws that don't meet our needs. Don't even bring a new law to the Legislature until you also find one that needs to be deleted. This will have the effect of cleaning out our legal codes at the same time that one moves forward with laws that are hopefully-- better, cleaner and more easi- ly understood. The second is: one thing at a time. Lawmakers ought to be discouraged thoroughly from multi-tasking as they are very bad at it. The first priority ought to be passing a budget, as a budget, !ogi- cally, sets the parameters for everything else. If there is any time left over, they can pass laws -- laws that every- one votes on, reviews, pon- ders, investigates and passes only when they seem truly wise and needed. And only then, when a bill has been voted on and passed by both houses, can a new law come under consideration before them. That ought to slow • them down. There is a corollary to this plan for responsible law- making. I'm not sure when the law, meant to protect us from one another, took up the challenge of protecting us from ourselves, but we must stop thinking that laws can do that. They can't. It's time we be the "adults" we claim to be and take respon- sibility for our own actions. And that means that if some motorcyclist refuses to wear a helmet because he loves the feel of the wind blowing through his hair and bugs splatting against his forehead, then so be it. But if his naked head meets up with a stubborn and sta- tionary tree, he shouldn't pretend that he didn't know the consequences.
