Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter * Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011 5C (;hildren's jujitsu classes resume Beginning in the second week of September Feather River Kodenkan Dojo will continue its popular jujitsu program for children. The program has been in place since 1998 to teach children effective and responsible means of self-protection. Jujitsu is not a sport but a self-defense training system with a long tradition, em- phasizing both physical fit- ness and mental flexibility. General fitness is promoted, includingstretching, bal- ance, foot and hand coordi- nation -- skills that increase confidence in physical abili- ties. As much as kids' interest in martial arts is usually in- spired by martial arts movies and books, the younger kids' physical coor- dination skills are usually not ready for the rigor of ef- fective self-defense training. For that reason the classes encourages enthusiasm for all sorts of physical activi- ties that build the founda- tion for more advanced mar- tial arts training. To keep them interested, it One of the many benefits of jujitsu is learning how to fall without getting hurt. Photo submitted is important to make sure the classes are fun while set- ting limits that demand re- sponsibility for their actions and caring for their fellow students. An important element of the training is to learn safe rolling and falling techniques. Learning how to fall without getting hurt is essential for everybody. Another important aspect is learning how to escape from threats like bear hugs and arm grabs, by applying effective surprise moves. Unnecessary aggressive atti- tudes are discouraged by showing children how to avoid confrontations, if not defuse them, before having to resort to more drastic measures. The goal is to de- velop good habits that avoid physical assault. The older juniors are in- troduced to the more ad- vanced escapes, joint locks, throws, ground techniques, strikes and kicks -- skills al- so taught in the regular classes for adults. Children should be at least 7 years old, or otherwise be mature enough to make the classes a worthwhile and en- joyable activity. Feather River Kodenkan has been offering regular ju- jitsu classes and assault pre- vention courses for adults and children since 1998, in Quincy and Portola. Sensei Burkhard Bohm has been teaching jujitsu for more than 25 years. The dojo is lo- cated in Quincy at the Plumas Pines Shopping Cen- ter, next to Quincy Cafe. Further information about classes can be obtained at graeagle.com/feather/, or by calling 836-1148.
