Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 13B ~ Democrats host health care forum Sept. 15 Despite passage of the Patient Protection and Af- fordable Care Act (PPACA) in 2010, questions and contro- versy still surround the issue of health care in the United States. "Health care woes still trouble America," said Trish Taylor, chairwoman of the Plumas County Democratic Central Committee. "We be- lieve the issue is so signifi- cant that the community would benefit from a serious discussion of what the act does and does not accomplish and how it applies to all of US." Taylor invites all members of the community to attend a panel discussion at the Veterans' Hall Thursday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m. A ques- tion and answer session will follow the discussion. Sponsored by the Plumas Democrats, the discussion will feature presentations by three health professionals who are members of the Chico Chapter of the Butte County Health Care Coalition and the California Physi- cians Alliance. The purpose of the group is to educate communities on key issues of health care reform, including promotion of a single-payer health care system. Ken Logan is a doctor who completed medical school at the University of Southern California after serving in the U.S. Navy. He has worked in clinics, as well as group and solo practice for many years. He is an active mem- ber of the Chico Chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program, California. Paul O'Rourke-Babb, FNP, is a long-term resident and health care provider in the Butte County area. He is ac- tive in the Butte C~unty Health Care Coalition, as well as the Chico Chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program, California. Tom Reed, MA, MPA, has been employed in the fields of human service and education in the Butte County area for more than 30 years. Reed founded the Butte County Plumas Arts receives grant for school art education The California Arts Coun- cil announced last week that Plumas Arts has received an "Artists in Schools" grant for the 2011-12 school and fiscal year. The "Artists in Schools" program from the state's arts agency is designed to support pro- fessional teaching artists in residency activities in classrooms and after school programs. Plumas Arts in Quincy will provide in-school, hands-on art workshops for K - 6 stu- dents at Chester Elementary, Greenville Elementary, Quincy-Pioneer Elementary and C. Roy Carmichael Ele- mentary. The organization received $9,000 in funding. There are 135 arts organiza- tions that received "Artists in Schools" grants to help bring music, theater, dance, visual arts and related arts to children statewide during the 2011-12 school year. "The arts are crucial to a student's educational de- velopment and especially enhance the essential life and career skills of creativity and imagination," said Craig Wat- son, director of the California Arts Council. "Our agency supports standards-based arts education through the Artists in Schools program so pro- fessional teaching artists can enhance the imagination and creativity of our state's school-age children." Music, theater, dance and the visual arts are at the core of these standards-based teaching artists residencies that will engage students from different socio-economic backgrounds in positive artistic expression. Examples of residencies vary from robust music programs to public-art pro- jects that involve students and members of the commu- nity to theater training and Tea party has speaker Ptumas-$ierr~Tea'Part)~ Pati~iots will hold a meeting Saturday, Sept. 10, 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the Graeagle fire hall. The special guest speaker will be Leonard Semas, teacher of constitutional studies in Carson City, Nev. Semas is the publisher and editor of the Sierra Sage, a monthly electronic magazine with a readership of 20,000 in northern Nevada and subscribers in all 50 states. He is the author of "Reason, Justice and Common Sense." He is also a part-time in- structor at Western Nevada College and a frequent guest speaker on topics of politics, current events and America's founding principles. In celebration of Constitu- tion Day Sept. 17, Semas will give an overview of the Decla- ration of Independence and how that document was the genesis of the Constitution. Everyone is invited to attend meetings of this non- partisan group. The organizations receiv- ing funding are in two categories: teaching-artists residency activity, or plan- ning grants. There are 129 organizations that will receive funding to bring professional teaching artists to in-school and after-school settings, and six organiza- tions will receive planning grants designed to assist the arts organization and, school partner to plan a course of action and strategies to incor- porate arts into the class- room and community. The total amount allocated for the 2011-12 Artists in Schools program is $1.1 million. For more information about Plumas Arts, visit plumasarts.org. In explaining why the local Democrats are hosting the forum, Taylor notes, "At the national level, the ad- vances in best practices, affordability and access that the PPACA was meant to secure for Americans are now challenged by budget cuts and lawsuits. "We all know people who have no medical coverage. Temporary and part-time work does not come with benefits. Long-term unem- ployment during the current recession will see more of us go without health care," said Taylor. "Health care for all is a matter of human dignity and wellness," she added. "Healthy mothers raise healthy kids with eager minds. As employees and business owners, healthy adults are able to be more productive. And, frankly, it's in the national interest to have a health); population. "The Plumas County Demo-', cratic Central Committee is committed to bringing in- formed discussion to the] community on subjects that" matter to Americans living' in Plumas County. It is not enough to be engaged. Voters need to have accurate" knowledge. We want to bring: this extremely vital issue to the forefront of community ! discussion."
