12B Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 Bulletin, Progressive, Record~ Reporter LETTERS, from page 11B This bill is disguised as a cure for school-yard bully- ing. But by categorizing peo- ple to distinguish them from ourselves, don't we simply encourage judging them by something other than their• character and accomplish- ments? Good work I would like to express my appreciation to the Califor- nia Highway Patrol officers for the work they do to pro- vide safety on the road for myself, my family and my grandchildren. I realize that there are some in Plumas County who have been used to ignoring safe driving by speeding, un- safe passing, drinking then driving and not maintaining their vehicles in a safe man- ner. I see them on the road almost daily. I hear citizens calling 911 regularly on my scanner reporting unsafe drivers. I am saddened by the atti- tude of some of our elected officials who often like to complain about state em- ployees not doing their job and now want them to ignore public safety and not do their job. I voted for these people and will take their attitude into consideration next time around. I believe in supporting local business but when local busi- ness places profits above my family's personal safety I may have to rethink my support. To those CHP officers, deputy sheriffs and other members of the law enforce- ment, sworn to protect, keep up the good work. Here are many of us who appreciate your aggressive actions to keep our families safe. We need to get our dis- trict attorney to review these past DUI cases for Fourth Amendment rights violations. The number of CHP officers in Plumas County needs to be cut in half. Seriously, these officers have way too much time on their hands. Their numbers don't make me feel safe, how about you? Lastly our legis- lators need to change the law on driving under the influ- ence that gave the CHP the right to determine what is under the influence. It's not just .08. Ed Ferguson Portola So tired I am tired of hearing peo- ple complaining about the CHP! All the problems I hear about are in the past, get over it! And most of the peo- ple that have had problems with the CHP have more than likely deserved it in one way or another! I have been pulled over a number of times in several different communities, and I have to tell you the officers here are much more easy going. Sure there's always a new officer in the area that wants to make his presence known but you'll get that in any community! Let's find something else to complain about, like Cal- trans completely screwing up Highway 70 going through Cromberg to Blairs- den turn-off! Why not just repave the road, or contract another company to repave the road? The stupid strip patch paving that is going on out there is just making the road worse. It may be OK if they could make the surfaces flat, but they can't, so doing this strip patching every rough road. Now that's our state dollars at work. Well I would like a refund for that! Jimmy Hogg Quincy Keynesian economics Given today's staggering problems ofjoblessness, gov- ernment debt, etc., it's ur- gent all voters take time to understand economics. De- mocrats prefer bigger gov- ernment; Republicans prefer smaller government. Democ- rats tend to trust govern- ment, which requires higher taxes to transfer power from citizens to government. Re- publicans trust citizens, and want more money left with the people who earnedJt. Last week I wrote about the successful history of "sup- ply-side economics," pre- ferred by Republicans and demeaned by Democrats as trickle-down economics. Democrats prefer "Keyne- sian economics," named af- ter British economist John Maynard Keynes (1883 - 1946). Keynes was heavily in- fluenced by the teachings of Karl Marx, the infamous ad- vocate of communism who lived in England from 1849 until his death in 1883.- When revolutions failed to achieve communism in Eu- rope in 1848, Marx wrote of achieving communism "pro- gressively" using institu- tions of a nation: legislative, judicial, education and the news media. According to Marx, socialism is the tran- sition from capitalism (free enterprise) to communism. Marx launched an era of so- cialist political parties and the Progressive movement beginning before 1880, and continuing until today. A core principle of Keyne- sian economics is that gov, ernment spending is the key to fighting joblessness. Pres- ident FDR was a progressive who raised government spending to more than three times revenue and created dozens of new programs and regulation, which served to prevent businesses from hir- ing. Theeconomy had bot- tomed out six months before FDR became president. He stalled the recovery and caused the Depression to last more than a decade. Unem- ployment never got below 15 percent. Please read an ex- cellent article by economist Dr. Walter Williams entitled "Dark Parallels Not With Carter But With FDR." (A Google search will reveal several websites posting this a~icle.) President Johnson's "War on Poverty, launched anoth- er massive expansion of gov- ernment lasting until Presi- dent Carter left office in 1981, 16 years of economic decay and declining living standards. Democrats are again prevent- ing recovery with the same failed Keynesian economics. Gene Kailing gram funding and the estimated waiting peri- od exceeds 12 months. The waiting list is NOT closed for Family Unification Program applicants. Please visit www.plumascdc.org for information on the Sac. 8 program. They are reporters in their 40s and 50s with upside down mort- gages and kids in college. Large newspapers are fad- ing away. I predict we will eventually have two or three "national" newspapers where we get our world and national news. But there is a segment of the industry that is still thriving: small, local news- papers like this one. The reason is simple: Peo- ple still want to read about what is going on in their neighborhood. And they are willing to pay a couple bucks for it. With the exception of our website, you can't really get Plumas County news on your smartphone. I guessed that small news- papers would be somewhat immune to the Great Reces- sion. And now that I am ac- tually working for one, I know it. People in Plumas County are passionate about what is happening in their commu- nity. I can tell by the feedback we get from readers on just about every story we write. Readers are quick to tell us how they feel. Whether the story is about the county budget, the school board, fireprotection, water and sewer rates, law enforce- ment, high school sports or the county fair, it doesn't seem to matter. People here care, and they don't hesitate to pick up the phone, send us an email or write a letter to emphasize the point. I can't even begin to tell you how refreshing that is. As a reporter, it makes me wantto work just that much harder. I want to tell you everything I know as soon as I know it. One thing I know for sure ... I am fortunate. Unlike many of my friends, I'm still earning a living in the newspaper business. • And being able to ply my trade in one of the most beautiful places in the world ... well, that's just icing on a big, fat cake.
