8A Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 Meningococcal disease poses risk to youths Fortunately, meningococ- cal disease is preventable in most cases by a single vac- cine. There are two vaccines available at this time. MCV4 was licensed in 2005 and is the preferred vaccine for people ages 2 - 55. MPSV4 has been available since the "1970s and works for all ages but is licensed for people over 55 years old. In most cases, only one dose is necessary. The two vaccines can prevent four types of meningococcal dis- ease, including two of the three types most common in the United States and one that causes epidemics in Africa. Approximately 1,500 people in the United States get meningococcal disease every year. Of those, 225 are children under 18 years of age and 22 .cases Children and youth may be in danger of death or per- manent illness from meningococcal disease, which can cause meningitis or widespread blood infec- tions. Anyone can get meningo- coccal disease, but it is most common in infants less than 1 year old, teenagers, college freshman living in dormito- ries and people with certain medical conditions. end in death.
