Block, prominent civic leader and funeral director, passed away last week, it was learned today. He was well known in Indian Valley, His funeral was held Friday evening, with a host of friends and business acquain- tances from throughout the north- c:'n valley attending. While the Block fufteral home will continue to be operated by Mrs. Madge Block, it wilt be under the management of Bill and Eve-" 'yn Manes, who formerly owned ,-nd operated the Manes funeral home in Greenville and the Chapel of the .Pines at Westwood, Mrs. Frank E. Hollister and Mr. and Mrs. Austin Cox returned re- cently from a two-weeks vacation, in which they visited Pacific Grove, Carmel, and Monterey. On the way home they visited friends in Mar:ysville. Milton and children have been vacationing in the bay area for two weeks, enjoying a few days in San Francisco and rising Beach and Pass Robles They also enjoyed the Ice Follies in the bay city. They were ac- companied home by Mrs. Smith, who is visting her daughter and family, Mrs. J. E. Cordoza. Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Gregory enjoyed a wiener roast at Powell's in Quincy, Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Avery Sheehan presented their daughter Carol with a lovely Hammond organ last week. Those present to en- joy her' playing were Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Gregory, Mr. and Mrs. Brophey, Mr. and Mrs. Foland and children, all accompanied by their violins, saxophones, trumpet and daughter of Reno came Tues- evening which was enjoyed by all. A birthday party honoring Nan- cy Briton was held Monday, Sept. 3. Those present inclucted Nola Shefield, Mrs. Sencie Knoll. Min- nie Hafner. Lottie Stampfli, Nan- cy Stampfli, Mrs. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Gregory, Mrs. J. R. Milton and children and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Milton and Nelda, Sen- cie and Bobble Milton and Frank Lambert. Refreshments were serv- ed, followed by the opening of many lovely gifts. Mr. and Mrs. August Frohlich and daughter of Reno come Tues- day of last week and spent sev- eral days visiting his sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Graver. Uhland. the Crescent school teacher returned Tuesday evening. She attended summer school this summer. Mr. and Mrs. SI Bates "and daughter of Sacramento spent Thursday with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Baker. They left Friday morning to visit in Oroville before returning home Sunday, Mrs. Baker went down to OroviUe with them to shop, re- turning Friday evening ,on bus. Lydia Sheehan and Elaine Me- Lain and Pat went over to Reno to shop on Friday. Nadine Brown will be leaving this Thursday, Sept. 6th for Ta- coma, Wash., where she will en- roll in college, Mary Sims returned from West- wood Hospital Friday after spend: n a few days recuperating from an automobile accident which oc- curred Saturday near McCloud. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Winchester and family, former residents here stopped on their way down to Clear Creek for a few days of fi§hing to visit friends. Mrs Elizabeth Bates of Van Nuyes, Billy and Bobby Bates and Cathy Herz of Burbank ar- rived early Saturday morning to visit Mrs. Bate's sister. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Baker. The Bates are former residents of Keddie Mr: and Mrs. Paul Tatro, Ken- ny and Mary Ann and Pat Me- Lain went down to Red Bluff Sunday afternoon to get Linda who has been vacationing with her grandparents this last week. Mrs. Ann Madigan, Roseanne ahd Lynne and Joe Madigan, Lill and Kay Youngman alI shopped in Reno Wednesday. Virginia Osborn of Chevy Chase, Maryland is visiting the Bob Keltons and her father. Mr. Caulback. Mrs. Roy Foster of Sacramen- to and Mrs. Ray Nelson and 3 children of San Francisco spent several days visiting the Charles Herrings. Mr. Foster and Mr. Nel- son joined them for the weekend. Mrs. Foster is the Herring's daughter, and Mrs. Nelson their granddaughter. Phyllis Nye and daughter, Sharon spent Wednesday in Quin- cy on busines and visiting Win- nie Price and family. The Catholic ladies made their sandwiches at Mary Baker's for the dance last Saturday. The dance was said to be a big success. Mr. and Mrs. Mac McLain and Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Sheehan went down to the Sacramento Fair on Saturday Della Fiekhardt and son ac- companied her sister and husband to Sacramento Saturlay to attend the State Fair. They will return Monday. Jiggs Fickhardt remain- ed home to go dove hunting. Mr. and Mrs. Fre Clariage of Albany are here visiting Mr. and rs. Jake DeHahn. Roy Baker won the champion- ship log bucking contest at the A F of L picnic at Clear Creek Sunday. The cheering section from here consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Baker and Mary Sims. GEORGE BURNS NOW BACK ON THE JOB George Burns has this week re- turned to work at the barium mine near Almanor, after taking a few days off due to having sustained a muscular strain which slowed him down last week. It is shipping barite to Modesto now after two years of inactivity. Mr. and Mrs. William Firmstone of Melbrae visited his sster, Mrs. Mark Herring and husband last Wednesday.
