Photo courtesy Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship REI grants $10,000 to Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship (SBTS) has been awarded a $10,000 grant by REI to assist in the develop- ment and launching of its Curriculum Development Program. This is but one as- pect of a larger, and growing, partnership between REI and SBTS. The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship has experienced significant success and growth throughout its histo- ry. It has grown from a small group with a limited scope and area of influence to a professional organization that has formed highly suc- cessful partnerships With two national forests, two coun- ties, several communities and thousands of individuals. The group has developed paid professional trail crews composed of local residents. SBTS events also attract hun- dreds of members and volun- teers from all over California and Nevada, many of whom regard SBTS as extended family. As a result of members' hard work and passion, SBTS has had other individuals and organizations express a keen interest in replicating the model and bringing simi- lar systems and successes to their own organizations. The Curriculum Develop- ment Program will outline the structure of SBTS and de- tail the steps and techniques used to achieve success in the maintenance, restoration and enhancement of outdoor recreation areas. The group plans to build on the already extensive experi- ence and expertise of its crew leaders to develop a Trail Master Program, through which leaders can certify that they possess certain skills and qualifications. Crew leaders will then be- come coaches and trainers in sharing the SBTS program with qualified organizations who request it, through the Curriculum Development Program. SBTS expects to complete this portion of the Curricu- lum Development Program by July 31, 2012. SBTS employs as many as 15 full-time, seasonal em- ployees, all of whom are Plumas and Sierra county residents, with a payroll of just under $400,000 for 2010. In addition to a paid trail crew, SBTS has donated more than 30,000 hours of volunteer labor to both the Plumas and Tahoe national forests, maintaining more than 30 trails, including the creation of 25 miles of new trails.
