6B Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011 Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Spanish Peak School, built in 1872, was the first school in the nation toffy the U.S. flag in 1888. In the Spanish Peak School's 1902-03 term, Anne Lena Gansner taught Plumas County's first multiracial class. Front row, from left: Lee Maurer, Mary Elazabeth Phelps, Alanson "Buff" McEIroy, Birdie Challen, Katie Miller, Fong Moon, Hey Moon and Johnnie McEIroy. Second row: Wing Schoon, Maggie Yager, Philip Miller, Myrtle McEIroy, Brennie Billings, Alta Miller, Ethel Robinson and Stella Billings. Back row: Nettle Miller, Gansner, Agnes Jacks, Olive Tucker, Milton Yager, Mattie Miller and Frank Hailsted. SCHOOL, from page 1B sounded, the students all scrambled back into the schoolyard. Except Margo, who couldn't get through in time and hid. Realizing she was missing a student, Miss Olsen called roll. When Margo's name was called and she didn't answer, Teddy Richards helpfully called out, "Thar she be, a'hind the tree teacher." The women met their husbands at that school. Ian McElroy, 14, was the third generation to attend there. Donna didn't like him a bit. • She said he was big and obnoxious. Gone now, the aspens that flanked the building bore the carved initials of Donna and Ian and Margo and Trevor. When the ditch went, the trees eventually followed. But the 97-year-old school- : house remains, cared for and • used by a small community of residents who love it. The factual history comes from information compiled in "Meadow Valley School History, " geherously made available by Scott Lawson at the Plumas County Museum. Thanks to Scott Lawson, Chuck Leonhardt, Donna McElroy and Margo Stratton for sharing their memories. L Taken in 1902, this picture shows the interior of Spanish Peak School, which was replaced in 1,914 with another • one-room schoolhouse now known as the Old Meadow Valley Schoolhouse. The occasion is unknown, but clearly the community took pride then, as now, in its schoolhouse.
