County smokers offered free nicotine patches
For a limited time, the Cali-
fornia Smokers' Helpline is
sending callers from Plumas
County free nicotine patches.
Eligible tobacco users who
call (800) NO-BUTTS and en-
roll in the free telephone-
based quitting program will
receive a free two-week
starter kit of patches, while
supplies last.
"The Helpline has already
served over half a million
smokers," said Christopher
Anderson, the Helpline's pro-
gram director. "We hope this
new opportunity will moti-
vate even more people to give
quitting a try."
The patches are an FDA-
approved treatment proven
to help smokers kick the
habit. They release nicotine
into the bloodstream
through the skin, reducing
withdrawal symptoms and
slowly weaning smokers off
nicotine.
Plumas County was one of
34 counties in California se-
lected to participate in this
program. All 34 counties have
an adult smoking prevalence
rate of 14 percent or higher,
according to the 2008 Califor-
nia Tobacco Survey; the rate
is 16 percent in Plumas Coun-
ty. In comparison, the 2010
statewide adult smoking rate
is 11.9 percent.
This new program is part of
a nationwide effort called
Communities Putting Preven-
tion to Work, which aims to
improve health and lower
medical costs by preventing
diseases, such as those caused
by tobacco use.
"Helpline counseling dou-
bles smokers' chance of suc-
cess in quitting," said Ander-
son. "People who use both
counseling and a quitting aid,
such as the patch, have the
best chance of quitting for
good. So now is a perfect time
to make that call and get
started."
The free patches will be dis-
tributed on a first-come first-
served basis to those who call
(800) NO-BUTTS.

Be wary of
cellphone
radiation
scammers
With consumers concerned
about harmful exposure to cell-
phone emissions, many scam-
mers are looking to promote
"shields" to protect consumers
from the cancer causing waves.
The Better Business Bu-
reau (BBB) along with the
Federal Trade Commission
(FTC) are warning con-
sumers to be on the lookout
for these so-called "shields."
They advise consumers to
turn to free options when lim-
iting exposure to cellphone
electromagnetic emissions.
As with many other too-
good-to-be-true products,
there is no scientific proof
that these shields are effec-
tive. While it is always good
to be protected from potential-
ly harmful emissions, there
are other ways to do it besides
investing in a cellphone
shield. The FTC notes that
these so-called "shields" may
interfere with cell reception.
"Leave it to scammers to
jump on the latest scientific
frenzy," said Gary Almond,
president and CEO of the
BBB serving northeast Cali-
fornia. "It's important for
consumers to do their re-
search before ~pvesting in
any too-good-tb-~e-true tech-
n01ogy. More times than not,
victims will end up with a
faulty product that doesn't ac-
tually do any good."
The BBB and the FTC ad-
vise consumers to consider
these free options for limiting
cellphone electroma.gnetic
emissions:
--Go hands free. When
chatting on the phone for
long periods of time, consider
using a hands-free device or
using the speakerphone fea-
ture. For short conversations,
consider texting the message.
--Wait for a good signal.
With a weak signal, a cellphone
works harder, emitting more
radiation. Phones also give off
more radiation when transmit-
ting than when receiving.
Thus, the BBB recommends
consumers tilt the phone away
when talking, and bring it back
to the ear when listening.
--Shop around. When look-
ing for a new cellphone, con-
sider investing in one that has
a low specific absorption rate
(SAR). Measured in watts per
kilogram of tissue, the SAR re-
veals how much radiation the
body absorbs while using the
mobile device. The FCC has
records of this information for
phones that were made in the
last two years. The FCC ID
number can be found on the
inside of the cellphone's case.
Legally, in the United States, a
phone can't emit more than
1.6 watts per kilogram.

sumer tips, visit bbb.org/us/
