NOTES EXPERIENCES
WITH UNCLE SAM I
q
Well, this goes to show you can
never tell where you'll be next in
the army. At the present moment,
I'mon a troopship bound for Casa-
blanca, North Africa. and thence
for Leghorn, Italy, final destina-
tion to be somewhere is Austria.
Never did I dream when I left
Greenville that I'd be on this
floating scrapheap heading across
the Atlantic. I though, (and who
wouldn't have at the time) that
I'd be permanently stationed in
Fort Bragg, North Carolina. like
a civilized human being {even in
the army). The army, however,
had different ideas.
I have no idea what we'll be
doing in Austria. but it won't be
occupation. I've had that much in-
formation gathered from the usual
sources of information a dogface
has, namely rumor. Rumor is
quite reliable, though. I've heard
we're in the middle of the Medi-
terraen sea. that we'll get to Casa-
blanca on Monday, Tuesday, Wed-
nesday, and Thursday, respective-
ly of this week. that we are sure
to turn around in the middle of
the Atlantic and head straight for
Korea (how we'd get to Korea
from here is a puzzle), that we
might get torpedoed at any mom-
ent by a Russian submarine, and
that we were to he split up as
soon as we reach Europe into
three tactical units attached to an
armoured division. Hmmmm Of
there, I believe none until it's al-
ready happened. Starting a rumor
is easier than fallng off a log.
You have but to say, "Gad. but
the Indian Ocean looks beautiful
this morning!" And ten minutes
Iater you're hearing some corporal
in another part of the ship swear-
CARD OF THANKS
We wish to eytend our heartfelt
thanks ancI appreciation to our
many kind friends, relatives and
neighbors for the acts of kindness,
messages of sympathy and beau-
tiful floral offerings received in
our sad bereavement in the loss of
our loved one.

during the night, ready to back up
this affirmation with mountainous
figures and bogus facts. That
should cause no end of diverting
confusion. It would be a delight-
ful relief if someone should in-
advertently fall into the ocean and
drown, wth accompanying hue and
cry, the stopping of the ship and
lowering of boats. Better yet, the
engine should blow up and throw
showers of sparks all over the
ocean some night and break up
the deadly monotony of the trip.
When I was sailing in merchant
ships, we had a lot to occupy our
time, but here there is less than
nothing. Oh, well, it's only an-
other three days until we reach
steaming, tropical, romantic, ex-
otic, sunbaked, beautiful Casa-
blanca. And after' that will be
Girralter and the Mediterranean to
see, so it won't be so bad.
