Catherine "Katie" Ellen
Rude
Catherine Ellen Rude
passed from this life with
her husband at her side
Wednesday evening, July 27,
2011, at the Seneca Health-
care District Hospital in
Chester.
Affectionately known as
Katie, she was a longtime
resident of California's Lake
Almanor Peninsula who will
be greatly missed by all who
knew her.
Born Jan. 3, 1927, in Covina
to Ethan and Ellen (Mallet)
Scofield, Katie was raised in
Covina and graduated from
Covfna High School as a
member of the class of 1945.
She went north to further
her education at UC Berkeley
where -- while attending an
anthropology class-- she
caught the eye of a handsome
young Naval veteran named
Eugene "Gene" Rude.
Although it may not have
been love at first sight in her
eyes, Gene worked hard to
convince her that he was the
one. He eventually suCceeded;
and the couple ~vas united in
matrimony Sept. 25, 1950. To
this lasting and loving union,
two daughters and a son were
born.
Katie received her bache-
lor's degree from UC Berke-
ley in 1949 and began her
teaching career as an occa-
sional substitute teacher in a
two-room schoolhouse in the
logging town of Hyampom, in
Trinity County. The family
moved to Redding in 1957
and then to Napa three years
later.
Once her children were
older, Katie began attending
classes at.Sonoma State,
obtaining her teaching
credential in 1968. Despite
growing up in a family of
schoolteachers and initially
resolving not to follow that
path, Katie discovered a love
of teaching and a genuine tal-
ent for it. Her successful and
rewarding teaching career
spanned about 20 years. She
and Gene shared a passion
for education and spent many
happy hours discussing
philosophies and techniques.
In 1969 the family relocated
to Pearl River, N.Y., while
Gene pursued his doctorate
at Columbia University and
subsequently worked as a
school administrator. Follow-
ing their retirement the
couple relocated to what had
been their summer home at
Lake Almanor, where they
spent the ensuing years
together. They took much
pleasure in their home, en-
joying the community and
their friends, and delighting
in the natural beauty of their
surroundings. Their home in
Lake Almanor served as a
center for family visits and
for summers with their
grandchildren who were
treated to Fourth of July
festivities, cooking, sewing,
art projects, lake swimming
and trips to the Bay Area for
plays and musical events.
A talented seamstress,
Katie found pleasure in
sewing and knitting for
her family. She took great
pride in sewing her grand-
daughter's wedding dress,
and regularly mailed beauti:
ful hand-knitted sweaters
to her children and grand-
children. She also passed along

her talents in the kitchen and
her love of fine cuisine to her
children and grandchildren,
all of whom fondly remember
meals at Grandma Katie's
house.
Katie enjoyed traveling
to the Bay Area to enjoy
the arts as well as her daily
exercise routines alongside
her husband at the local gym.
Katie also became an active
member of the Lake Almanor
community, helping and vol-
unteering everywhere she
could.
A great love of her retire-
ment life was the Sierra
Hospice where she served
as a loving, caring and dedi-
cated volunteer for the orga-
nization. And she could often
be found working side by side
with her husband at the
Lions Club fundraisers.
Katie's life and volunteer
focus always kept the youth
of the community in mind,
and she will be dearly re-
membered for the craft bags
and other items she would
sew for grieving children.
Katie leaves her loving
husband of almost 62 years,
Gene Rude, of Lake Almanor;
daughter Stephanie Rude and
her husband Jerry Smith,
of Austin, Texas; daughter
Janice Franks, of Uklah; son
Nathan Rude and his wife
Mary, of Rocklin; the joys
of her later life, her grand-
children Caitlin Miller, Nikki
Hawkins, Analise Mullis,
Alex and Elliott Rude and
Wesley Franks; and great.-
grandchildren Kaylee and
Allison Mullis and Sam
Miller. She was eagerly
awaiting the birth of two
more great-grandchildren.
A private family celebra-
tion of Katie's life will take
place at a later date. She will
be greatly missed by her
friends and all of her loving
family, who join together
and request that, in lieu of
flowers, donations to Sierra
Hospice of Chester be made
in Katie's memory.
