Get your kids outdoors
during the summer vacation
With schools all shuttered
up, it's often a challenge
for parents to keep kids
active and entertained
through the dog days of
summer. But parents, take
heart -- the Youth in the
Outdoors (YO?) program,
sponsored by the California
Department of Fish and
Game (DFG), may have just
the ticket to get kids off the
computer and outdoors this
summer.
"I can't think of a better
way for a child to spend
a summer in California than
to take part in one of the
many outdoor programs
around the state," said
DFG Director John McCam-
man. "There's something
for almost every kid, from
fishing lessons to archery
to guided nature walks.
Encouraging your child to
experience and discover a
love of the outdoors may
foster a better understand-
ing and respect of our natur-
al resources, and in turn
will help ensure that Califor-
nia's habitats are protected
for future generations."
YO? maintains a calendar
of kid-friendly summer
events around the state, in-
cluding those sponsored by
organizations and nonprof-
its unaffiliated with DFG.
Check out the calendar at
dfg.ca.gov/yo.
To have youth-friendly
outdoor events listed on the
calendar, contact YO? at
(916) 322-8933.
Just a few of the northern
California Opportunities
currently listed include:
Siskiyou County: Kids Fishing
Day at Mt. Shasta Hatch-
ery, Saturday, Aug. 20. For
additional information, call
Monty Currier, 225-2368.
Tehama County: Kids Outdoor
Sports Camp, various dates
in June and July. Juniors
age 10 and up spend a
week gaining a variety of
fishing, conservation and
hunting skills emphasizing
safe firearms handling. For
more information, see
mykosc.org/camp_informat
ion.htm.
Various locations: American
Red Cross's First Aid and
CPR training. Enjoy the
outdoors by being properly
prepared -- a must for
outdoor enthusiasts (many
other classes are also avail-
able). For more informa-
tion, see redcrosscrc.org.
The calendar is updated
regularly so check back
throughout the summer
months.
YO? is a collaborative
effort between DFG and
a number of outdoors-ori-
ented foundations and orga-
nizations around the state.
Its purpose is to facilitate
the conservation, enhance-
ment and restoration of
fish and wildlife and habi-
tats through the education
and participation of youth
in" California's outdoor
heritage. For a complete list
of YO? sponsors, see
dfg.ca.gov/yo/sponsors.html.
