Summer is a busy time for
members of the Indian Valley
Riding and Roping Club,
whose members work hard
during all the June and July
events and activities at the
Taylorsville Rodeo Grounds.
The Silver Buckle Rodeo --
held this year Monday, July 4
is perhaps the most locally
renowned event they host,
yet there are several others.
In June each year there are
California State Horsemen's
Association events as well as
the club's first playday of the
season.
Then there is the jackpot
roping event that precedes
the rodeo. This year they sad-
dle up Thursday, June 30, for
four days of roping with free
spectator seating.
The cookhouse is open, and
cold drinks will wash down
burgers or the dust from the
ropers.
The second playday will be
Friday, July 8, at 5 p.m., fol-
lowed by the Taylorsville Ju-
nior Rodeo Saturday, July 23,
and a rough stock event the
next day.
Things slow down for
August, with time for a club
campout in the Caribou
Wilderness Aug. 10 - 21, and
the final playday of the sea-
son Saturday, Aug. 27, at 9
a.m., which will be followed
by awards and a potluck.
For the end of the season,
there will be a Destry Camp-
bell Horsemanship Clinic
event in September, and then
a Christmas party in Decem-
ber to close out the year.
Club members also meet
throughout the season for
roping practice, work days
and other events.

Equine herpes container I
The recent disease out-
break of the neuropathogen-
ic strain of Equine Herpes
Virus-1 (EHV-1) associated
with the horses that attend-
ed the National Cutting
Horse Association's West-
ern National Champi-
onships in Ogden, Utah, is
contained Containment is
based on the fact that Cali-
fornia has gone more than
14 days from the last clinical
case onset date without a
confirmed clinical case of
EHV-1.
"I want to thank Califor-
nia's horse owners and vet-
erinarians for their prompt
and thorough actions to iso-
late and monitor exposed
animals and contain this
outbreak of EHV-I," said
State Veterinarian Dr. An-
nette Whiteford. "We also
owe the success of this pro-
ject in part-to the outstand-
ing isolation biosecurity
measures implemented by
horse facility managers,
show/event managers and
other professionals who
work with and care for hors-
es."
It is important that Cali-
fornia horse owners remain
vigilant, as there is always
risk of disease when horses
of unknown health status
are commingled at one loca-
tion. Consistent, basic biose-
curity practices play an im-
portant role in reducing
risk of exposure to diseases
such as influenza, strangles,
pigeon fever and equine her-
pes virus.
By implementing the
biosecurity measures below,
disease risk can be mini-
mized
Minimize horse nose-to-
nose contact with horses of
unknown disease status.
Don't share equipment
including buckets, tack and
grooming equipment.
Avoid using communal
water troughs.
Fill water buckets
directly from the faucet to
eliminate potential hose
contamination.
Limit human contact
between horses or wash
hands or use hand sanitizer
between horse contacts.
Prior to returning home
from an event, clean and
disinfect all equipment,
in eluding trailer, clothing,
tack and grooming supplies.
Isolate all new horses or
horses returning home for a
minimum of three weeks.
Isolation means no direct
contact with other horses or
humans and no indirect con-
tact via shared equipment.
Consult a ,ve.terinarian
to establish approp,riate vac-
cination for horses.
Horse owners are strongly
encouraged to consult their
vetei'inarians regarding
these steps and others to
determine how best to
reduce the risk of a horse
acquiring an infectious
disease.
