Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Wednesday, June 22, 2011 15B Eclectic book 00:hoices 0000nark sz00',mmer readi.{!j WELCOME, GENTLE READER i" Along the way, Connors of- like "to live, at least part of this one. "Fire Season: Field Notes From a Wilderness Look- out" by Philip Connors I happened upon a copy of this recently published title at Epilog Books in Quincy as I was preparing for my stay at the Black Mountain Look- out in eastern Plumas. The purchase was a no-brainer. I took the book along with me. Connors describes a season, April through August, work- ing as a lookout on a remote peak at 10,000 feet on the Gila National Forest, something he has done for the last eight summers. fers a tutorial on the history the year, out here on the edge, of fire and fire suppression in where worship of the material the American West, thoughts recedes and acquaintance on wilderness (his post over- with the natural becomes looks OllU U[ tile UIUUt i:llltl possible" will find much to largest wilderness areas in learn and enjoy in Connor's the nation), and reflections account. Delaine Quincy SARAH Customer reviews from B&B Booksellers in Chester... "Postmistress" by Sarah Blake A bittersweet story about how world events affect dif- ferent people and different places, even those far away from the action. Blake lets the threads of the story un- roll gradually and weaves them together in a touching story of loss and redemption. Betty Chester "Change of Heart" by Jodi Picoult Picoult does not disappoint on other literary lookouts Ed- ward Abbey, Jack Kerouac, Norman Maclean and Gary Snyder. He also provides an overview of the evolving thinking of Aldo Leopold, ar- chitect of the Gila wilderness. But the book is also a medi- tation on what Connors calls "radical solitude." "One in- disputable charm of being a lookout is the sanction it offers to be shed of the social imperative of productivity, to slip away from the group hug of a digital culture enthralled with social networking, the hive mind, and efficiency defined as connectedness." Anyone who has ever pondered what it would be her readers in this novel. Fol- lowing the same moral com- pass as in her past writings, this time she speaks of the death penalty and all its polit- ical and religious controver- sy. She combines characters of a priest, a rabbi's daughter and an unusual death row in- mate who shows signs of mir- acles. They all work toward his wish to be an organ donor after execution and provide the greatest miracle of all -- life. Mary Susanville Kelly Peroni at High Sierra Books in Portola recommends "A Dogs Purpose" by Bruce Cameron It is now in quality paper- back. I loved this book. David McCullogh just came out with his new hardcover, "Greater Journey." I have heard wonderful things about "Dead Reckoning" by Charlaine Harris Spokie finds herself in another mess in this llth installment of the series. Dodging firebombs, kidnap- pings and major bad guys Sookie does her best to stay alive, but it seems as if enemies are coming at her from all sides. Sookie has to figure out who is targeting her, while trying to help Eric come up with a plan to get out from under Victor. "Dead Reckoning" is jam packed with.action and plot twists from the beginning to the bloody end. Theresa Epilog Books, Quincy "Long Lost" by Harlen Coben "Long Lost" is a page-turner. Myron receives a call from an old flame, Terese Collins, who tells him to come to Paris. D;WID iX' * .... r" i 'It. Cl, lAX)f, t.,t-t REATER ,,,o g_, .,K!% ,.t. "t .L.,,' .. At the Paris airport customs office Myron is held up and questioned by a hostile French officer and let go. The way in which Coben develops the rela- tionship between the pair is reminiscent of the sarcastic, sassy comments of "The Saint." This is a clever and compli- cated plot with an ingenious scheme involving egg donors and an anti-abortion, anti- stem-cell research organiza- tion that is buying fertilized eggs, especially those of blonde parents. The organization is devel- oping a family of terrorists who look like Anglos, with the intention of training them to hate and then planting them in American cities to carry out their terrorist plots. The book ends on an ominous note with a serious 16-year-old blue-eyed blonde boy getting off a tour school bus with a group of happy teenagers.
