words. The editor will cut any
letter in excess of 300 words.
The deadline is Friday at 3
p.m. (Deadlines may change
due to holidays.) Letters may
be taken to any of Feather
Publishing's offices, sent via
fax to 283-3952, or e-mailed to

Resulting noise
Tut, tut, Trent Saxton. You
want to live in a country pop-
ulated exclusively by folks
who share your political
views? Sounds pretty dull to
me. More than that, it sounds
downright un-American.
The First Amendment to
the Constitution requires
that "Congress shall make no
law respecting an establish-
ment of religion, or prohibit-
ing the free exercise thereof;
or abridging the freedom of
speech or of the press .... "
The language of the amend-
ment is downright sweeping.
And thus, intelligent folks,
sincere folks, crackpots, pub-
licity seekers, conservatives,
liberals, socialists, fascists,
monarchists and all sorts and
conditions of human beings
are free to speak their minds.
Tolerating all the resulting
noise is often a tiresome chal-
lenge, but as a people we've
generally thought that the al-
ternative of banning this or
that speech is worse. So
cheer up, Brother Saxton: the
clash of political views is
nothing more or less than
democracy in action, as
American a thing as apple
pie, cook-outs and the Fourth
of July, and common to all of
US.

Despair
In Dr. Trent Saxton's letter
to liberals in last week's pa-
per, he displays an amazing
departure from civil dis-
course. Juxtapose this with
Sheriff Greg Hagwood's
thoughtful "Where I Stand"
column about how fortunate
we are to live here and you
wonder if we all live in the
same world.
Saxton wants to divorce all
right-thinking conservatives
from "America-hating" liber-
als and he details the most
"clownish" and stereotypical
judgments about those of us
who have the Impertinence
to disagree with him. It ap-
pears that Saxton is the one
who hates America.
I was taught in school in
the 1950s that civil society is
made up of people with many
different points of view who
come together to find com-
mon ground in order to solve
complex and stubborn prob-
lems. To polarize society into
uncompromising extremes
will never solve anything.
I am disheartened by the
media's treatment of political
discourse (both sides) over
recent years. How can we
find solutions to the prob-
lems of crime, the role of gov-
ernment, economic recovery,
energy policy, health care
and the military if we do not
listen and talk realistically to
each other?
Since you can only envi-
sion a world where half of us
do not exist, how can we
solve anything? It is not rea-
sonable to think you can get
rid of us and your faulty as-
sumptions about our motives
guarantee that sitting across
a table from you to find solu-
tions would be pointless.
Whatever happened to rea-
soned argument, honesty and
thoughtful discussion? What-
ever happened to simple re-
spect?
I despair.
I wonder what you mean
by "Judeo-Christian values."
The values I hold dear are
hondsty, respect, humility,
kindness and unselfishness.
With these I have learned
that life results _in fewer
problems. I think this is what
Christ was talking about.

Calm down
When facts are swept away
by fervor it is time to calm
down and look at things with
a dispassionate eye. The peo-
ple who are warning that So-
cial Security won't be there
for the next generation are
not telling us the facts. The
facts are that the money that
is going out today comes
from the surplus that the
fund built up over its 65
years of existence. This sur-
plus is continuing to expand
and by 2022 will reach $3.67
trillion. (I wish I had room to
write it out with all its ze-
roes!) If we do nothing the
fund would begin to decline.
But just removing the cap
from what top executives,
movie stars and baseball
players pay into the fund
would build up the surplus
way into the next century.
In fact Social Security is an
example which other entities
would do well to
follow. Only 0.09 of every dol-
lar goes to administration,
returning a little more than
99 cents of every dollar to its
recipients. So how about
turning our attention to the
trillions of dollars that are
going into wars that have no
end money that could be
going to schools and teach-
ers, policemen and firefight-
ers.
And the panic over what
Medicare is costing us is an-
other case in point. Dr. Sax-
ton in his letter of June 8
writes that health dare is a
luxury not a right. Most of us
think that it comes under the
heading of "life, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness." Is
he aware that most Medicare
recipients pay $96 a n~onth
every month whether they go
to the doctor or not? To say
nothing of the cost of"'medi-
gap" insurance every month,
$250 and up. Not a free ride.
So let's just calm down.

I hope someone responds to

Plumas County is conserva-
tive (for the most part) and
that's fine. I believe in a two-
party system that keeps the
scales in balance. But here
are the facts about Plumas
County, front page, out in the
open, "Demand for aid con-
tinues" (June 1).
Twenty percent unemploy-
ment, MediCal assistance up
to 1,104 people, the communi-
ty mired in a recession, over
600 people in need of food
stamp assistance, and no
help on the immediate hori-
zon. This is what government
is for, protecting the health
and welfare of the citizens.
These people have this "safe-
ty net" to turn to in time of
need. That doesn't happen

Plumas County Sheriff, one
common thread seems to
have been woven throughout
the messages: the power, im-
portance and intimacy of
knowing, speaking with, see-

local representatives. It is at
a local level where every gov-.
erning body, being bound by
the Brown Act, in addition to
the U.S. Constitution, is
obliged to grant citizens op-
portunity to speak their
views openly. There is some-
times a time limit placed on
those talking points offered
by citizens, in the interest of
keeping the meetings on
schedule.
