PET PEEVES HIGH SIERRA AN IMAL RESCUE Some time back we dis- cussed the plight of older dogs that are discarded just when they need our help the most! More and more, people are discovering one of the best-kept "secrets" in rescue: the older dog. The assumption used to be that older dogs were discarded because of some behavioral or health issue -- "baggage," as it is often referred to in the rescue busi- ness. However, some of the more common problems are: --Not enough time for the dog. Need to move and cannot take the dog. --Change in work schedule or lifestyle. --Personal or family issues. It is important to note that these reasons are related to the owners, not the dog. So what advantages might older dogs have over puppies or young dogs? Older dogs generally have had some training, both in obedience and house manners. Older dogs have typicallylearned what "no" means. Also, they are a known commodity and most responsible rescue groups will have completed some form of behavior or temperament assessment. Lastly, and maybe most im- portantly, an older dog is probably more socialized and knows how to be part of the family. For instance, they can settle down next to you while you relax and enjoy the quieter moments in life. What about older dogs costing more in vet bills? Again, most responsible rescue groups will have infor. marion on the dog's physical health and may have already taken care of any serious health issues to make the older dog more adoptable. Older dogs are particularly good for senior citizens, and dogs of all ages have a proven track record of helping to reduce one's blood pressure. Most re cue groups also offer some sort of senior-for- senior discount and may agree to take care of some of the initial costs to deal with a specific health issue, espe- cially if the new home is an ideal fit otherwise. There you have it... the best-kept Secret in rescue! The next 0me you are think- ing of adding man's best friend to your "extended" family, take a moment to consider that older dog. You'll be doing the dog a favor and you just might find that you're doing yourself one as well. For more information on this subject, check out The Senior Dogs Project at srdogs.com.
