Hannah and I joined the train at Oroville on a drizzly and humid Saturday norning. Several hundred Umbrellas lined the track as the train pulled in. Passen- ers, who joined the train riday between Emeryville and Sacramento, spent the night at hotels and motels in hico and OroviUe. . are miles Our route took us around Sake Oroville, up the Feather liver Canyon to the Keddie Nye. At Keddie, we'd take the eft leg of the trestle onto the reat Northern-Instde Gate- ray Line, through Crescent Vlills, Greenville and West- ood, eventually meeting the reat Northern Line at ieber, where ceremonies Nov. 10, 1931, celebrated the Completion of the last major iailroad construction in he West. From Bieber we ontinued north to Klamath Falls, returning the next day bn the Shasta route. The Bieber route has been fpen to through freight raffic: No scheduled passen- per servme ever ran on the route. i Rail enthusiasts informed bs these were considered [rare" miles, and mileage arkers were duly noted in heir logbooks. Pullman built the Plaza Santa Fe in 1950, for service on thelSuper Chief operating between Los Angeles and Chicago; the Plaza Santa Fe was designed for deep cushioned comfort. It is known as the Pleasm'e Dome-Turquoise Dining Room (a favorite of film stars and notables such Elizabeth Taylor, Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra) and bar lounge 503. The car features a glass- domed observation deck, with large swiveling chairs. Downstairs are two lounge areas with a full bar and an elegant dining room. Every seat is adjacent to a picture window to ensure all passen- gers have an unparalleled view of the world as it quietly glides by. First class service, includ- ing breakfast and lunch served with real china and linen, and a hosted bar, afforded us a glimpse into the lifestyle of an era long gone. A time for reflection Host Chris Skow, of Trains & Travel International, led a tour of the entire train. The outside observation platforms of the first and last cars were particularly spectacular for taking photographs. Once Chris "cut us loose," we joined fellow passengers in the lounge, stretched out our legs, sipped a cocktail (soda for Hannah) and watched the world go by. The journey up the Canyon was akin to being on the other side of a mirror. Peaks never glimpsed from High- way 70 gave way to seasonal waterfalls you could almost touch from the train. Poe Dam was particularly spectacular; water seemed to escape from every which way as it strained to hold back the abundance of winter runoff. As we inched our way north from Keddie in the rain, it was reassuring to know we were being guided by "Bronco Bravo," one of the railroad pickup trucks, equipped with Hy-rail attach- ments. The driver's job was to look for slides, washouts and unsafe track condition. As we left the Canyon be- hind, Indian Valley and Lake. Almanor beckoned. The views were stunning and from a perspective few out- side the railroad ever get to see. The journey north took us through the Lava Beds National Monument, then into Oregon to Klamath Falls by mid-evening. Klamath Falls -- City of Sunshine We spent the night in Klamath Falls at the Maverick Motel. Our brief foray into this modest, high desert city revealed an elegant and clean main street with an abundance of stores and restaurants. We settled on pizza followed by instant slumber back at the motel. Early next morning, bright sunshine welcomed us as we walked back to our train. Some expediency was re- quired in boarding as the Amtrak Coast Starlight was due in shortly. Leaving Klamath Falls over breakfast, we passed an abundance of fresh water marshes adjacent to the Rail travelers gain new perspectives in many ways. Seeing the Ee_ather River Canyon from "the other side," as well as looking back down the track from the observation deck at the end of the Northern California Explorer were good reasons to make the trip -- plus the much-sought-after "rare miles."
