Lassen High alum
pilot in Reno crash
Ruth Ellis
Staff Writer
rellis@lassennews.com
The mother of the pilot who
died in a plane crash 25 miles
outside of Reno, Nev. con-
firmed her son was a 1981 grad-
uate of Lassen High School.
Jeanette Ling said her son,
Eric Allen Ling, 47, was
helping two people fly to New
Mexico during Memorial Day
weekend. The Washoe County
Sherifffs Office has identified
the other two victims as 29-
year-old Paula Hincapie and
41-year-old Hector Moreno,
both of Everett, Wash.
According to Ling, her son
had never met the couple. She
said they walked into the
Roseburg Airport looking for
someone to help them.
Mike Danielle, Roseburg
Municipal Airport director,
said based on statements
he heard, the single-engine
Cessna 172 plane took off from
Roseburg, Ore. sometime after
3 p.m. Saturday, May 28. The
plane was found Tuesday,
May 31 when Armando Avila,
a deputy with the Washoe
County Sheriff's Office, said
the agency received reports
about 7 p.m. that someone saw
wreckage on top of Petersen
Mountain near Hallelujah
Junction.
Ling said they started get-
ting worried Sunday, May 29,
when they hadn't heard from
Eric.
"We kept calling and call-
ing," she said.
Finally, she said they went
to the Roseburg Municipal
Airport to try to get some
answers.
Ling leaves behind a wife,
Carol, and four children
ages 20, 19, 16 and 7; parents
Jeanette and Donald Ling and
two brothers, Vincent and
Stephan, who are also LHS
graduates.
The National Transporta-
tion Safety Board is now lead-
ing the investigation.
NTSB Public Affairs Officer
Keith Holloway said it is still
too early to determine the
cause of the crash and NTSB
is still gathering facts.
He said the NTSB should
have a preliminary report on
its Website ntsb.gov this
Thursday, June 9.
Danielle said it is believed
the plane traveled southeast to
Klamath Falls and emerged
from the worst of the weather
and at that time contacted
Seattle Center that it would, be
cancelingthe instrument
flight plan and' rathe[than
going to Reno, it would be
going to Susanville.
There was bad weather in
the Lassen County and the
northern Nevada region on Sat-
urday and Datema said no one
flew out of Susanville that day.
