Entering La Casa Bella is a
bit like visiting someone's
house and an art gallery all
at the same time: comfort-
able and interesting in a
mixed-up kind of way. There
is so much to catch the eye
and capture the imagination.
That's the way owners
Jeanne and Norm Brovelli
planned it.
Jeanne said although the ba-
sis of the store is furniture,
they strive to create
an atmosphere of art,
comfort and texture. They
want people to see possibilities
for their own homes
with home accessories and soft
Eclectic color and texture are two of the hallmarks of the Brovellis' store.

furnishings such as pillows,
throws, wall clocks and art.
She said, "So many People
come in saying, 'I'm getting
ideas.'"
The Brovellis want their
customers to feel good when
they leave the store, whether
they've been browsing for
ideas or made a purchase.
The couple want to provide
personalized service and will
ask a lot of questions about a
customer's plans for an item
-- where it will go, what its
purpose is and what the bud-
get is -- to help them find
just the right piece.
Jeanne especially enjoys
helping customers with deco-
rating ideas. She knows so
many of their customers per-
sonally. She gets a thrill
when her children's friends
come into the store, looking
for ways to decorate their
homes.
Alternatively, Norm and
Jeanne are equally comfort-
able leaving a customer time
and space to browse without
hovering. There are no
pushy salespeople at La Casa
Bella.
Jeanne comes from a retail
furniture family. Growing
up in Santa Clara in the 1950s
and '60s, she was always
intrigued with the decor as-
pect of the business. She's a
certified interior redesign
consultant.
She came to Plumas Coun-
ty in 1971. Through a variety
of business experiences, she
has developed an expertise in
customer relations.
Norm comes from Butte
County where he had a cabi-
net shop for 20 years. Jeanne
said he's the "spacemeister"
with a real talent for mer-
chandising the store's wall
art.
They began the business
six years ago after a year of
considering business possi-
bilities that combined their
talents 'and backgrounds.
Jeanne said when she saw
the store was available, she
rented it on the spot. Norm
joked that they just beat out
the "hot dog man."
Jeanne said in the begin-
ning the inventory was more
expensive, but they've ad-
justed to provide quality
home furnishings for any
budget.
They strive to keep things
affordable, especially in
these times.
They also look for unique
pieces in wall art, lighting,
clocks -- customers will not
confuse the store with Sears.
Their chairs and sofas are
made in the United States
and they offer hundreds of
fabric choices. They recently
brought in Restonic beds,
which are made in the Bay
Area.
In addition they look for lo-
cal suppliers, as well as recy-
cled and fair trade goods. A
charming wren house --
made in Blairsden -- is a re-
cent acquisition, as is the
Haitian angel made from re-
cycled oil drums.
Norm creates many cus-
tom pieces for customers, as
well as the store's Cottage Fi-
esta line of dressers and cabi-
nets.
If the Brovellis don't have
"it" in stock, they'll order it
or make.it. Their goal is to
provide their customer with
la casa bella -- a beautiful
home.
