Wilbur Vaughan
Wilbur Vaughan spent his
last days surrounded by fam-
ily at home where he passed
peacefully on May 17, 2011,
in Sacramento. He was born
and raised in Oroville and
died at 87 years old.
Wilbur's early introduc-
tion to skiing led him to join
the fabled 10th Mountain Di-
vision in World War II,
whose heroic mountain cam-
paigns liberated northern
Italy from the Nazis. This ex-
perience cemented his life-
long love of the mountains,
backpacking and skiing,
which he enjoyed until he
was 60 years old.
He worked for the Califor-
nia Department of Water Re-
sources each summer during
college as a Snow surveyog,
trekking up and down the
Sierra measuring snowpack
for annual runoff estimates.
Wilbur was in the first
graduating class at Sacra-
mento State, where he was
founder and president of the
ski dub. This was where he
met Joyce Brundige, the ski
club secretary, who became
his wife (September 1951) of
23 yea.rs until she passed
away from cancer in 1976.
His 32-year career with
Moore Business Forms in
Northern California as
district manager impacted
the careers of many people.
He and his brothers built a
family cabin at Bucks Lake
in 1934 and this was
Wilbur's passion and a joy-
ful meeting place for family
and friends for the rest of his
life.
Wilbur is the acknowl-
edged "father" of the Bucks
Lake Wilderness Area,
which was signed into law in
1984 after a 15-year effort
and alliance with Alan
Cranston and David Brower
and the Friends of Plumas
Wilderness.
He was also an avid back-
packer, introducing his fam-
ily and friends to the south-
ern Sierra during annual
trips.
He loved jazz and classical
music and always created
natural beauty in his sur-
roundings. He expressed his
creativity through landscape
architecture, stone masonry,
film making and photogra-
phy. Wilbur was a longtime
member of both the Sacra-
mento Downtown Rotary
Club and the Quincy Rotary
Club.
Wilbur's most memorable
traits were his ambition, his
sense of humor, his conge-
nial demeanor and his love
for family and friends. He
most enjoyed creating time
and place for family and
friends to be together, and
he always embraced new ac-
quaintances into his family.
His greatest pride was in his
children and grandchildren,
each of whom had a special
place in his heart.
He is survived by his three
children, Gordon Vaughan,
of Pleasanton, Laurie Buffin-
gton, of Tahoe City, Terrie
Redkey and husband Doug,
of Quincy; and eight grand-
children, including Chase
and Kylie Redkey, of Quincy.
His family welcomes you
to join them at a memorial
service and celebration of
Wilbur's life at Arden Hills
Club at 1220 Arden Hills
Lane (off Fair Oaks Boule-
vard) in Sacramento, on
Tuesday, May 31, at 11 a.m.
Any donations in Wilbur's
memory may be made to the
Mono Lake Committee or
the California Wilderness
Coalition, or a charity of the
donor's choice.
This incredible yet hum-
ble man will be missed by
many and will continue to
inspire those who knew him.
Donald Eugene
Kampschmidt
Donald Eugene Kamp-
schmidt passed peacefully
from this life at his home in
Willows May 19, 2011.
Don was a hard-working
man in the many areas of
logging, trucking and ser-
vice station owner/operator.
In the evening of his life, he
worked for his son Ron in
rice farming.
As with all busy people,
Don was also a volunteer
firefighter for over 50 years
with the Greenville Fire De-
partment.
He is best remembered by
his family for his patience,
his passion for model trains
and the many hours he spent
assembling model railroad
bridges from hand-cut balsa
wood.
Don also had a profound
curiosity for how things
worked and could re-
pair/rebuild just about any-
thing.
In later years, he and his
beloved Margaret spent
many years traveling the
western United States in
their fifth wheel.

Ron and wife Kathy, of Wil-
lows; daughter Judy and

Brooksie Freemyers
Brooksie Lee (Coombes)
Freemyers, 65, of West Jor-
dan, Utah, passed away May
20, 2011, at home amongst
her loving family.
She was born in Joplin,
Mo., on Feb. 11, 1946, the
daughter of Betty and
Charles Coombes. Brooksie
graduated from Clayton Val-
ley High School, Concord,
Calif., in 1964.
She was married to James
Leland Hughes from Aug. 3,
1968, to February of 1981.
She was then married to
Gerald Freemyers, of
Greenville, on Valentine's
Day 1982. They lived togeth-
er in Greenville, Livermore
and Tracy until his passing
in 2003. She found great com-
fort in the loving compan-
ionship of Charles Hopkins,
of Livermore, over the last
eight years.
Brooksie was a strong and
independent woman, a fiery
"redhead" with a zest for life
and a strong devotion to her
family. She worked in
restaurant management, as
a bartender and as a real es-
tate agent. She most enjoyed
being a wife, mother and
grandmother, spending qual-
ity time with her family. Her
extensive collection of pigs
was a mainstay in her home
and continued to grow as
friends and family acquired
new and unique swine
figurines as gifts for her
passion. A child at heart, she
loved her many visits to Dis-
neyland where she was en-
chanted by the magic king-
dom and the smiles of the
children.
Brooksie is survived by
two children, James Hughes,
of Modesto, and Brooklyn
Bos and her spouse Antho-
ny, of West Jordan, Utah;
and by two stepchildren,
Stan Freemyers and spouse
Sharyn, of Chesapeake, Va.,
and Geneva Sietzinger and
her spouse Tim, of Mel-
borne, Fla. She is also sur-
vived by 10 grandchildren
and one great-grandchild
and by two siblings, Char-
lene Barney and Stan
Coombes, of Tracy.
A memorial service for
friends and family will be
announced at a latter date. A
digital version and electron-
ic guest book is available for
signing at premierfuner-
al.com. In lieu of flowers,
provide donations to the
American Cancer Society at
