Their service is helping to lessen burning, air pollu- tion from the smoke and fire hazard from burning and dumping. Collins Pine Company is an asset and good neighbor to our community, and many thanks for stepping up by fill- ing an important need. Robert MacArthur Lake Almanor Fed up I'm positive the front page of the Portola Reporter will read something like this, "Portola City Council decides to delay rate increases," or something along those lines. Well, after a couple hours of patronizing Portolans, the City Council did decide to not move forward with the Propo- sition 218 process. I can as- sure you that the increases are still coming it's just "when" and "how much" is what Portolans will have to wait for. I have made it a point to ask why Portolans didn't get a "choice" to decide which wa- ter they wanted to drink. And by "choice" I don't mean com- ing to a council .meeting and actually stating a fact of pref- erence, and then watching the council decide for themselves as to what they feel is good for Portolans! We have lost our voice as citizens in this community thanks to the administration and council doing backdoor politics and making deals be- hind' our backs! When will it stop? I am thinking never- until the close-minded people get off of that council, or allow people to actually have a voice in this community, then I don't foresee any major changes coming soon. Myself, I am fed up with the way things are being allowed. The mayor has continually al- lowed people to interrupt me and demean me during the "public comment" portion of meetings. May 11 meeting was about the topper of the top- pers. The council had police at the meeting for the entire evening and I am still wonder- ing why anyone would stay around for three hours for topics which don't concern them? Once again the mayor should be taking more control over the meetings and not al- lowing people to interrupt anyone during their public comment portion of the agen- da. It's time for a change! Michael Rush Portola Lost freedoms Plumas County is subject to a lot of non:consent with issues being forced upon us. The SmartMeter. I don't want it; neither do the residents I spoke with. The health issues are enough to scare anyone; I do not want my grandkids ex- posed to high microwave fre- quencies that these throw off. Why were we given an opt- out option for these, but re- fused the option when we called? Write the PUC and complain, we need to do this now. Did you know PG&E throws chemicals all over qur Basin to cloud seed; we don't know what they use? The Almanor Basin sits in an inversion area. PG&E states this is safe. Toxins go up, they come back down as manmade snow. This cannot be healthy. PG&E does this practice on SPI land. There are no laws state/federal governing this. It's absurd. The forest issue, who thought of this brilliant idea? How can they even think about keeping people out of the forests? There are laws of navigation in this land, it is a constitutional right. Bravo to Sheriff Hagwood for speaking up on your oath to protect us, you got my'vote! I urge you to step up and be heard, write your elected offi- cials. It's up to us, we the peo- ple, to step up and stop these injustices for our kids and for their kids' sake. The Dec- laration of Independence RESPONSE, from page 9B Unfortunately, these im- proved opportunities for the public are proposed at the ex- pense of local government co- ordination. There is no need for such a trade-off; the public can be given the opportuni- ties that are included in the new rule, while the role of lo- cal government can be re- spected by retaining Section 219.7 of the 1982 rule. Pace and scale of fuel treatment: Pacific Southwest Regional Forester Randy Moore has called for an in- crease m the pace and scale of fuel treatment to 500,000 acres per year in California to re-establish fire-resilient forest ecosystems and help offset climate change im- pacts on the forests. Unless fuel treatment efforts are in- creased dramatically, the size, number and intensity of catastrophic wildfires will continueto grow, pro- gressively destroying the Sierra Nevada. Each forest plan should be required to quantify acreage progress and timelines that will be achieved to restore healthy forest conditions and main- tain those conditions on a sustainable basis. Given the state of the fed- eral budget and the unlikeli- hood that the pace and scale of necessary fuel treatment will be supported with ap- propriated funds, forest plans should include contin- gency financing plans that show how fuel treatments can be made financially self- supporting.
