The annual National Asso-
ciation of Letter Carriers na-
tional food drive -- the
largest one-day effort of its
kind -- provides an opportu-
nity for citizens to help fami-
lies in need in their own
communities. The donations
will be delivered by the letter
carriers to local community
food banks and pantries.
Donations are especially
needed this time of the year
when the shelves at food
banks and pantries are
becoming bare and also dur-
ing a period when millions of
children who rely on the nu-
tritional benefits of school
lunch programs will be with-
out that resource for several
months.
More than 1,500. local
branches of the 315,000-mem-
ber postal union in all 50
states, the District of Colum-
bia, Puerto Rico, the U.S.
Virgin Islands and Guam are
participating in the 2011 dri-
ve, involving more than
10,000 cities and towns.
Making a donation is easy.
Residents are asked to leave
non-perishable food dona-
tions in a bag near their
mailboxes Saturday, May 14,
before their letter carriers
arrive. The donation will be
taken to the local post office
and on to a local food bank
or pantry.
Postal customers who do
not receive mail delivery
may contribute by bringing
non-perishable food dona-
tions to their local post office
May 14.
Nearly 100,000 full-color
postcard flyers, featuring a
cartoon by "Family Circus"
artist Bill Keane, will be
mailed to homes across the
nation to alert citizens of the
drive. The cards will be de-
livered by the Postal Service
to residents in participating
cities in the week before the
drive.

'tion in the food drive, con-

The Feather River Coopera-
tive Parish, which is com-
posed of the United Methodist
churches in the communities
of Chester, Greenville and
Taylorsville, and the Chester
Community Chorus, will ben-
efit shortly from a very spe-
cial cultural opportunity.
Spiritual Image, an all-Fil-
ipino chorale, will be offering
a special performance one
day only, Saturday, May 14.
"While their main objective
is to raise funds for church
buildings or improvements,
to help during times of disas-
ter and/or to help any
Methodist Church or individ-
ual constituents that may
need funding, their purpose
for this concert is to help
make up for the loss of funds
from Feather River College,"
said Chester Community Cho-
rus director Elsie Wesley,
who worked as the interim
choir director for this chorale
from September 2010 to Feb-
ruary 2011.
"They are very unique
group and I am proud of
them and their endeavors of
reaching and helping out,"
Wesley added.
Spiritual Image is known
for its choreography. A small
band accompanies the
chorale.
There will be two concerts,
one at 3 p.m. and one at 7 p.m.
at the Chester Community
United Methodist Church at
the corner of Highway 36 at
Glenwood Drive, in Chester.
Ticket cost for the fundrais-
ing concert is $10.

ing the Chester Community
Chorus call music director

More fire
Plumas County is eligible
for additional disaster recov-
ery funds as a result of the
2008 fire season.
The county already has
been awarded $525,098 in Dis-
aster Recovery Initiative
funding for repairs to the To-
bin water system, fire clean-
up and money to offset some
general fund activities.
On Tuesday, April 26,
Plumas County Community
Development Commission Ex-
ecutive Director David Keller
asked the County Board of Su-
pervisors to approve amend-
ing the original application.
The revised application
amount totals $1,020,688.
The board voted unani-
mously in favor of the amend-
ment.
Keller said the state Depart-
ment of Housing and Commu-
nity Development announced
additional funds were avail-
able. He said the revised ap-
plication allows the county an
additional $100,000 in general
fund money.
"The county would have at
recovery funos for county
its disposal $250,000 for gener- very happy that we could pro-
al plan work in the safety and vide some of those dollars
hazard mitigation area," through this grant to the
Keller said. "So we are very, county for that activity."
