Posch's winning propeller project is neatly and completely explained in her presentation board,
including all the help she received from her mentor, Kest Porter.
Seth Back attracts lots of attention with his science project, which is a Ruben's Tube that demon-
strates with mathematical precision the speed at which sound waves travel.

Efforts to design a better
helicopter propeller won
Genesee Posch the $500 grand
prize in the Science Fair
hosted by Greenville Junior
Senior High School.
There were 90 science pro-
jects entered from students
of the high school, Indian
Valley Academy and Plumas
Charter School.
Although there were the
standard volcano and plant
projects familiar to many,
there were also some innova-
tive and thoughtful projects
as well.
For the past three years,
science teacher Travis Rubke
and a dedicated group of
volunteer mentors have in-
creased the caliber of student
projects to where scientists
at Lawrence Livermore Labo-
ratory have taken enough
interest to send up a panel of
judges who took time to speak
with students and enrich
their science experience.
This year three major
changes were made to im-
prove the program, including
the active recruitment of
mentors, an expanded scope
to include other schools and
development of a fund with
help from Eastern Plumas
Health Care and a few local
donors for cash awards.
More than $1,000 was
distributed to students this
year, and hoPes are to have
an even larger fund for distri-
bution next yeai'.
Rubke was very excited
about the quality of most
of the science projects this
year, and he's grateful to the
community members who
were willing to come in and
spend time with the students.
He hopes to see some of the
projects evolve into senior pro-
jects, or to return as projects
again next year with deeper
study and experimentation.
