So You Want to Be Healthy?
~ The Formula ~
This is a wish that most of us have. But looking around you
might never know it. You will see a lot of people who smoke,
cough, wheeze, have one-sided weakness due to a stroke, have fluid
retention and shortness of breath due to heart disease, blindness or
missing toes due to diabetes, or who are pale and debilitated due to
cancer. A common response is to write off these conditions as effects
of aging but none of these are directly caused by aging. There is
actually no good reason why we can't get to be 80 or 90 years old
without any of these diseases. And, of course, occasionally you see
the 90 year old who is trim, fit, mentally vigorous, very active and
enjoying life. What is the secret of these few?
I'll give you a hint. Look around the streets and hiking trails
of Plumas County, and who are the healthiest people you see? It's
actually the kids. The secret of their success is simple-they don't
smoke, they eat 3 square meals a day, they are running around like
crazy, and they often take naps. It turns out those same habits will
work for you.
Most of us remember fondly those joyous, healthy, vigorous days
of our youth. BUt so often something changes, and we forget about
the very things that made us so healthy. We start adding a bunch
of sugar and high-fat foods to our diets and watch our belt sizes
grow a centimeter or 2 a year. Soon afterwards our blood pressure
tends to go up along with our cholesterol. Cholesterol plaques start
blooming in our arteries, and we are well on our way to our first
heart attack ten years down the road. As our padding around our
hips, buttocks, and abdomen slowly grows larger and softer, we end
up with diabetes, kidney disease, more heart attacks, possible
stroke, and loss of vision. None of this has to happen. The American
way of life invites us to be oblivious to what we are allowing to
happen to our bodies until we get that wake up call from chest pain,
stroke, diabetes, or cancer. Unfortunately this wake-up call comes
far too late. At this stage, while medications will help, they are
not the answer; nor is weight-loss surgery or having a rotor-rooter
procedure for our arteries. At this point it is not possible to get back
to the health of our exuberant youth.
The secret of long-enduring health is really simple. You have to
begin and maintain a healthy lifestyle. This approach offers parents
a unique opportunity to save their children, even if they have not
preserved themselves. The good news for parents is, even if you
have led an unhealthy lifestyle for the last 20 years, if you make
changes now, you can dramatically reduce your risk of heart attacks
and strokes within a period as short as a few years. In fact,
you achieve far better outcomes by adopting a healthy lifestyle
late in life than by getting frequent tests and constandy adjusting
medications.
What is a healthy lifestyle? It is as simple as the formula:
0 - 5 - 10 - 30 - 150. It's an easy serie3 of numbers to remember,
and it may be the most important set of numbers you ever learn.
The "0" stands for zero cigarettes-don't smoke, or quit if you do
smoke.
The "5" stands for "5 servings of fruits and vegetables." It has
been proven in clinical studies to be as effective as complex diets, "
like the Mediterranean diet. °
The "10" stands for ten minutes each day of engaging in any
activity that is relaxing or stress-reducing for you-whether it is
reading, walking, playing a card game, yoga, or meditation. If you
can do it at around the same time each day, you will get even
greater benefit.
The "30" stands for maintaining a BMI less than 30. BMI is a way
of measuring your weight that adjusts for your height. It has become
the standard way to monitor weight in medical practice. While
the ideal BMI is between !8 and 25, it is not necessary for health
to achieve the ideal. It will suffice if you can just maintain your
BMI at less than 30. Even though BMls between 28 and 30 are
significantly overweight, epidemiological studies show that major
increases in heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes do not occur until
the BMI goes over 30.
Finally, "150" stands for getting 150 minutes of exercise every
week (or just over 20 minutes a day). The exercise does not need to
be any more complicated than taking a brisk walk. I prescribe a dog
for any patient who can't think of a good reason to take long walks
regularly.
I have developed a poster to try to make it easier for patients to
remember these 5 essential elements of a healthy lifestyle. It is
something I will want to talk to all my patients about every single
time they come to the office.

If you do, change just one factor at a time, until you have
mastered all five criteria, what are the benefits to you? Over the last
ten years, fourteen major epidemiological studies have shown that
leading a healthy lifestyle, as defined by these 5 factors, can prevent:
93% of all rases of Type 2 diabetes
78% of cases of high blood pressure
83% of all Heart Attacks
79% of all Strokes
47% of all cases of Heart failure
36 to 64% of All cancers
and a healthy lifestyle can reduce
your overall chance of dying early by 40 to 65%
