2C Wednesday, March 16, 2011 • Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Off and.running Marielle McAdroy and Maceleine Ramos participate when Feather River College competes in its inaugural track meet at the Beaver Relays hosted by American River College earlier this month. Photo submitted Beginning our 27th year in business! During the past 26 years, we are proud to have built more than 70 homes and 100 garages in Plumas County, not to mention the hundreds of remodels, additions and insurance repairs we've done as well. With the change in the economy (specifically, fewer new housing starts), my business partner (and son) Donavon and I knew we had to change our business model. We're not going anywhere, and we still build new homes, garages and commercial buildings. So, in the past year we found there was a real need to assist homeowners in making their existing homes more efficient, attractive and valuable. We've helped lots and lots of people with all kinds of projects that might have only taken 15 minutes to several days or weeks to complete. And, if we couldn't do their job, we'd make sure to connect them with some- one who could. It's that kind of service and satisfaction that will help take us through our next 25 years!!! Photos by Shannon Morrow Portola Tigers go down fighting The Portola Lady Tigers basketball team lost at home to the Vacaville Christian La- dy Falcons on Tuesday, March 8, 50 to 57. It was the first- round game of the California State Championships. The Falcons are the Sierra Delta League runners-up, and are ranked 42nd in California Di- vision V. Portola, Mid-Valley South League champion team, is ranked slightly lower at 47. The game promised to be a barnburner, and the fans were not disappointed. Both teams came out hard and aggressive in the first frame with trapping full court press defense. The Falcons got the better of the defensive pressure, forcing 11 turnovers by the Lady Tigers in the first period. Most of these turnovers translated into points for Vacaville. However, the Cats managed to keep pace, starting the sec- ond act behind by just one, 10 to 11. The Tigers kept having trouble holding onto the ball in the second quarter, as the , i: ..... After 16 first-half turnovers, the Pur- ple and White trailed by nine at the break: 18 to 27. The La- dy Tigers came out strong in the third stanza. In spite of re- peated turnovers, Portola fought back by turning up their own defense, and domi- nating both the defensive and offensive boards. By midway through the third period, the Cats had pulled to within two buckets. However, it didn't last tong, as the Falcons continued to make short runs, capitalizing on purloined passes and an oc- casional uncontested 3-point- er, to finish the quarter with a comfortable lead of 29 to 39. The Tigers were not ready to concede, however, and pulled to within three points several times during the fourth quarter. Finally, with about 1-12 minutes left to play, the Cats were forced to start fouling in a last-ditch at- tempt to catch the Falcons. However, Vacaville's free- throw shooting was almost perfect as the game clock inex- orably ticked down. The Lady Tigers kept at- tacking up to the last second, as senior guard Bailey Holt drained a 3-point rainmaker to cut the deficit to seven points at the final horn. The Portola girls closed the book on their last game of a long and successful season on the short end of a 50 to 57 score. Leading the scoring for the Lady Cats was sophomore Emma Briggs tallying 18, senior Anna Roach netting nine, senior Ellie Kibble notching six and junior Lindsay Compton contribut- ing five. In the battle of the boards Briggs snatched 12 re- bounds, while senior Lucy Wilbanks wrestled away 10, Roach gathered in eight and junior Marissa Wehrman and SEAMLESS • Save decks & siding from water damage • Downspouts water diverter • Custom installation • Adds value & appeal to your house 22 Different Colors FREE ESTIMATES 257-7875 CA LIC #690120 Michael Kirack ,uilder :::i : CONSTRUCTION, INC Compton collected six each. "We had a great run this year," said coach Matt Comp- ton. "This is a special group of girls, and I have really en- joyed working with them." The Tigers are losing five seniors to graduation this year. These girls have been playing together since the fifth grade, and have really bonded on the court. Captain Bailey Holt made plays at the point for the Tigers all season. Holt was the Lady Cats' sec- ond most effective thief, pick- ing opponents' pockets 80 times in 30 games. She also finished No. 5 in scoring, net- ting 130 total points. Co-captain Lucy Wilbanks led an extremely strong bench for Portola. Wilbanks was tough and effective under the glass, leading the team with 171 rebounds, and playing all 30 games. Offensively, Wilbanks contributed the fourth highegt point total for the Tigers, racking up 142 to- tal counters. Center Anna Roach battled injuries early in the season, but fought back to finish strong as No. 2 in scoring with 186 total points. Roach fin- ished with the second highest team rebounding total, frus- trating opponents by grabbing 163 boards. Ellie Kibble anchored the Tigers' wing, and finished the season with 113 points. Kibble also nabbed 50 steals from op- ponents and dished out 25 as- sists to her teammates. Center Camry Housel came off the bench making many crucial contributions to the team over the course of the season. Housel made numer- ous key plays, both offensive and defensive. Against Los Molinos at home the Tigers were struggling until Housel sank four of six from the field, grabbed five rebounds and three steals to turn things around. "Next year we have a lot of good talent returning," said Compton. "I am sure we will be very competitive, but we'll sure miss these senior girls!"
