Past Greenville Future Farmers of America members might be
surprised that their old classmate Matthew Blowers is a horse
trainer now, because he "wasn't really into horses" back then.
Now he is going to put his career with horses to work for a
good cause while riding the Pacific Crest Trail. Photo submitted

Matthew Blowers wasn't in-
to horses much when he was a
member of the Greenville Fu-
ture Farmers of America, but
now he's a horse trainer and
guide, and he plans to ride the
Pacific Crest Trail for a good
cause -- childhood cancer.
Four years after he left
Greenville High School, Blow-
ers met Terry Howard, who
taught him about training
horses and driving a team.
Many of his family mem-
bers have been taken from
Blowers due to cancer, and es-
pecially harsh was losing his
10-year-old cousin to
leukemia.
He will dedicate his two-
month ride to the American
Childhood Cancer Organiza-
tion.
"I have always wanted to do
something to benefit a cancer
organization," Blowers said.
He will ride Penny, a 5-1/2-
year-old dun quarter horse.
Blowers will start his ride
toward the end of August, just
in time for Childhood Cancer
Awareness Month in Septem-
ber.
The American Childhood
Cancer Organization
American Childhood Can-
cer Organization was started
in 1970 by a group of parents
whose children had been diag-
nosed with cancer.
They came together to lob-
by for more research, and to
support each other through
the diagnosis and treatment
of these life threatening dis-
eases at a time when very few
children survived.
Today, the organization is
one of the largest national
grassroots organizations dedi-
cated to improving the lives of
children and adolescents with
cancer.
The organization provides
"advocacy, information shar-
ing and services to families
who have children with can-
cer.
Organization membership
includes families of children
and adolescents who are in
treatment or have been treat-
ed for cancer; children and
adolescents who are currently
fighting cancer; survivors of
childhood and adolescent can-
cer; bereaved families; spous-
es, friends and family of long-
term survivors; and health
care professionals and educa-
tors who work with cancer pa-
tients and survivors.
The mission of the organi-
zation is to address the needs
of families through programs
that emphasize information,
advocacy, awareness and re-
search.
For more information
about the organization, call
(800) 366-2223, ext. 105, or vis-
