The end of a school day
doesn't usually end with a
van plowing through the side
of the building, but for the
few people still in the Long
Valley Charter School build-
ing around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday,
Feb. 15, that's exactly what
happened.
"I was just sitting here,
doing my homework," said
Long Valley student Bre
Barron. "Then a car came
through my school."
Barton, School Registrar
Shelley Tilford ,and Regional
Program Coordinator Cindy
Henry were among the hand-
ful of people left in the build-
ing at p.m. Tilford said
a Beige Ford Windstar van
driven by a teenage girl came
around the corner onto
Union Street from Cottage
Street, lost control of the van,
broke through a fence,
jumped part of the school's
parking lot beneath the fence,
landed, then accelerated at
the building, blowing right
through the side of the
building, she also had a
teenage passenger.
"I was sitting at my desk,
working on the computer
when I saw the car," Tilford
said. "Cindy was next to me
at the time ,&hen we both saw
the car come flying at us. We
were both able to get out of
the way before the car came
through."
No one was injured in the
collision.
Tilford said the two girls in
the van weren't hurt, but she
thought the driver panicked
after dropping from the top
street parking lot on Union
Street into the school's park-
ing lot. Tilford believed the
shock of what 'was happening
may have caused the driver
to accelerate after landing
instead of hitting the brakes.
The impact from hitting
the building caused glass,
wood, metal and brick to
fly everywhere. The van
received minor damage to its
exterior, according to Henry.
Meanwhile, workers from
Kirack Construction Inc.
were next door working on
a remo4el of HiLites Salon.
After hearing the initial
impact, the workers came
over to see if everyone was
all right. After the Susanville
Police Department and
Susanville Towing came and
did their initial work at the
scene, Kirack's crew went to
work clearing away the
debris. They were able to
board up the building for
the night, until permanent
repairs to the building could
be made.
"My guys were just doing
work next door when
they heard the crash," said
Michael Kirack, owner of
Kirack Construction. Inc.
"We thought we would come
over and help them seal the
place up."
Tilford said the efforts of
the construction workers was
much appreciated, especially
after the initial incident.
"They deserve all the
credit," said Tilford. "We are
very glad they were next
door. We couldn't have clone
it without their help."
As for the school, Henry
said the building is fully in-
sured for repairs. The school
is scheduled to be closed for
the rest of the week.
