The Portola and Quincy
boys' basketball teams met
in a non-league contest Tues-
day, Feb. 8, with Portola
winning 60-42.
The Portola Tigers
outscored Quincy'19-12 in
first quarter an d 13-9 in
• second quarter to take a
32-21 lead at hafftime.
- Portola added 14 points in
each of the final two quar-
ters while holding Quincy to
nine points in the third
quarter and 12 points in the
fourth quarter, giving the
Tigers an 18-point win.
Kyle Heskett and Mario
Rodriguez each drained 16
points for Portola, while Les
Carr netted nine.
Heskett led the Tigers
with seven steals, while Ro-
driguez led with five assists
and snagged three steals.
For Quincy, Keyshawn
Johnson led with nine
points and Cal Blanton com-
piled seven.
On the boards, Piero Sel-
vaggio came down with 11
rebounds for the Tigers,
while Carr and Rodriguez
grabbed eight apiece.
Quincy's rebounding was
led by Johnson and Zack
Vaughn, with seven apiece.
Vaughn also tallied three
blocks for the Trojans, while
Devonte Smith captured
four steals.
Then last Friday, Feb. 11,
Port01a posted a 64-61 league
win at Williams.

Heskett led the Tigers
with 23 points, while Ricky
Lowdermilk netted 18 and
Cart sank 11.
Lowdermilk and Carr
each captured nine re-
bounds for Portola, while
Heskett collected five steals
and six assists.
Portola, on a 1'6-game
winning streak, looks to
finish its league schedule
undefeated ff the Tigers can
beat East Nicolaus in their
final game of the regular
season this Friday, Feb. 18,
in Portola.
Chester prepares for Friday

In last Friday night's home
game against Reddlng Christ-
ian, the Chester High School
boys' basketball team used the
.match as a warm-up for this
Friday night's home game
against Liberty Christian.
Chester had no problem
against Redding Christian,
as the Volcanoes posted an
84-54 k, in to extend their win-
ning streak to eight straight
games.
Liberty Christian will pre-
sent more of a challenge for
Chester this Friday night, in
their last league game of the
season.
"It's a huge game," said
Chester coach Joe Gilmour.
"Liberty Christian is very
good. They have really great
players and they're well
coached. It will be a fun
time."
Chester, with an overall
record of 20-4 and league
record of 8-2, will present a
challenge to Liberty Christ-
ian, who is 20-3 overall and
10-0 in league.
"We'd love to see a gym full
of people come out and sup-
port the kids," said Gilmour,
who referenced the five se-
niors on.the tm ........
The game is scheduled to
begin at 7:30 p.m. this Friday
night, Feb. 18.
In last Friday's victory
against Redding Christian,
Chester had built a 23-7 lead
by the end of the first quarter
and a 45-20 advantage at half-
time. The Volcanoes shot 59
percent from the floor.
Ten players scored for
Chester. Cole Fanning led
with 23 points, followed by
Chad Durkin with 12. Ryan
Bereznak, Topher Taylor and
Jake Simms claimed eight
points apiece, while Dylan
Schriver and Keith Warm
each earned seven.
Durkin totaled 11 rebounds
and six blocks. Simms and
Fanning registered eight re-
bounds each. Simms and
Taylor captured four steals
apiece, and TaYlor distrib-
uted nine assists.
Quincy girls defeat Portola with 17-4 fourth quarter
On Tuesday, Feb. 8, the
Quincy girls' basketball
team defeated the Portola
Lady Tigers 47-34. The loss
was the second in a row for
Portola and a sweet victory
for the Lady Trojans. The
Portola girls ended the week
on an up note, however,
beating the Williams Yellow
Jackets 58-29 in Williams.
The Tigers faced the Tro.
jans on Tuesday night in a
crowded and noisy home
gym. The game was intense
from the beginning, with the
Trojans outscoring the
Tigers 14.11 in the Opening
act.

The Lady Tigers turned up
the heat in the second frame
with senior guard Ellie Kib-

opportunity to take the lead
into the locker room.

to play to a 30-30 tie by the
.end of the third period.
In the final stanza, the La-
dy Trojans slowly pulled
ahead, and with about three
minutes remaining, held an
eight point lead. The Lady
Cats once again failed to cap-
italize on free throw oppor-
tunities, hitting only two of
13 attempts during the sec-
ond half.
Trojan senior center Ash-
lee Nieman turned in a bril-
liant second period, scoring
the bulk of her 19 points to
keep Quincy ahead. As the
game clock ticked down, the
Trojans smelled victory, and
continued to increase their

At Williams on Friday, the
Portola squad notched its
fifth league victory against
no losses by swatting down
the Yellow Jackets 58-29.
The Cats leaped out to a 26-
point lead by intermission,
3.5-9. However, the Jackets
got tougher in the third peri-
od, gaining two points on the
Tigers. Senior point guard
Abby Cranford drained sev-
eral 3-pointers to keep
Williams from losing
ground.
It wasn't enough however,
as Portola pulled down a sea-
son high of 56 rebounds, and
drained 11 of 18 charity toss-
es. The final score of 58-29
gave the Lady Cats a 22-3
record overall, with a 5-0
record in the Mid-Valley
South League.
Top scorers for the Tigers
were Briggs tallying 14,
Wehrman and Roach sink-
ing nine apiece, Wilbanks
putting through eight and
senior center Camry Housel
netting six.
As for the battle of the
boards, high rebounders
were Kibble snagging 12,
Wehrman collecting 10,
Wilbanks grabbing nine and
Bailey Holt pulling down
eight. , •
The Portola girls play
their' final game of the regu-
lar.season this Friday, Feb.
18, at home against East
Nicolaus.
The Quincy Trojans wrap
up their regular season this
Friday at Hamilton.
