Life Saving Heart Facts Women ARE created equal! February is Heart Month, and m recent years the American Heart Association and other leading organizations have been focusing their efforts on Women's heart heath. Heart disease is now the number one killer of both women and men; women account for half of heart disease related deaths. What is coronary heart disease? The CDC defines it as "a narrowing of the coronary arteries, which results in a decreased supply of blood and oxygen to the heart." Coronary heart disease often leads to heart attack, which is "caused by the sudden blockage of a coronary artery, usu- ally by a blood clot." According to Dr. Milind Dhond, Cardiologist at Eastern Plumas Health Care, heart disease "kills more women than all cancers combined." Further, it's a more devious ller in women than in men. We're used to thinking "heart attack" if we experience sharp chest pain, for example, but "fewer than 30 percent of women reported having chest pain prior to their heart attacks, and 43 percent reported having no chest pain during any phase of the attack," said Dhond. The primary symptoms of heart attack in women include shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, cold sweats, and dizziness. Also prevalent are back and jaw pain, which aren't classic heart attack symptoms. According to Dr. Dhond, women are more likely to die of a heart attack than men, which may be because they're used to thinking it's a man's disease and because "women's smaller hearts and blood vessels are more easily damaged during a heart attack." Men and women do have in common the risk factors for heart disease, however. In the United States, the top risk factors (listed from highest rate of occurrence to lowest) are: lack of exercise, obesity, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, high cholesterol, and diabetes. This list makes it blatantly obvious that our number one killer is caused, most often, by our own poor lifestyle choices. In other words there are some very simple things we can do to save our own lives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), your risk of heart disease decreases by as much as 80 percent when you maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes NOT doing the following: overeating, smoking, and drinking more than one alcoholic beverage per day. There are also a few things you need to do, including exercising vigorously for 30 minutes a day and eating a low-fat, high fiber diet. If these seem daunting to you, start small and work your way up. Walk your dog, cut out the French fries, eat your broccoli! This isn't a lot to ask if it could mean the difference between life and death, Typically, heart attack victims don't realize that they're having a heart attack at first. And yet, it's essential to get treatment as soon as possible. Life-saving heart attack interventions are most helpful when started early in the course of the attack. Further, surviving a heart attack is only the first step; it's vital to minimize damage to the heart muscle. If you think you or someone you know might be experiencing symptoms of a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately. When it comes to saving your life and your heart muscle, every second counts. Plumas County's hospitals have ambulance services that can respond rapidly, and they have crew members who are Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) trained, allowing them to apply the clinical interventions and urgent treatment necessary, so that you get the help you need long before you arrive at the emergency room. Finally, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is an effective life saver for victims of cardiac arrest outside of the hospital setting. While cardiac arrest is most often caused by heart attack, 35 percent of the time there is another origin, such as: trauma, non-trauma related bleeding, overdose, drowning, and pulmonary embolism (a blockage of the main artery of the lung). Fewer than one-third of sudden cardiac arrest victims who aren't in the hospital receive CPR on the spot. And yet, if a bystander is able to administer CPR, the victim's chances of survival can double or triple. Some of Plumas County's hospitals offer inexpensive CPR training courses for the general public taught by a certified CPR instructors. i Article courtesy of Eastern Plumas Health Care When you need us most we're here for you.
