Since the middle of Janu- ary, when the weather be- came warm, the hardy souls of the Men's Golf Club have been escaping the confines of their winter dens to bask in the warm sun and breathe again. Most all played well considering the length of their absence from their fa- vorite hobby and the condi- tion of the golf courses played (frozen greens with muddy and wet fairways). As the weather allows, the club members will gather at a golf course in the general area and get in a round of golf. It is a fun way to spend a winter day also there is plenty of good e]tercise. For the balance of the win- ter the golf club will be try- ing to play weekly on days FICTITIOUS BUSINESS when the temperature is ex- pected to be above 50 de- grees. If you are interested in playing, please contact fellow clUb members for the details. At halftime, the girls led 24 to 13, and after the break the Cats outscored the Dogs by nine points to notch their 21st win of the season, 50 to 30. Briggs led the scoring with 14, senior center Camry Housel netted eight, Kibble tallied seven and Holt lit up the board for six. Portola overcame 21 offensive turnovers with 23 steals of their own, led by Emma Briggs with eight. The Tigers dominated the g]rass pulling down 48 rebounds with Roach getting 11, Wehrman snagging 10, Briggs retrieving nine and Wilbanks hooking seven. On Friday, the Hamilton City Braves, ranked num- ber one in the Northern Section Division Five, brought the high flying third-ranked Tigers back down to earth. Portola struggled from the outset with a very quick and ag- gressive Braves squad. The first quarter was the tough- est for the girls as they sank only one of 23 shots from the field, and Hamilton outscored them 21 to 3. By halftime, the Lady Cats trailed 31 to 6. After the intermission, the girls settled down a bit, playing the Braves nearly even with a final score of 54 to 28. Portola had their poorest shooting game of the season, sinking only 19 percent of their field gdal attempts, although credit needs to be given to the tough Hamilton defense as there were very few uncon- tested shots to be had. At the charity line, the Tigers did only slightly better, making six out of 20. Holt was a bright spot on defense stealing the ball five times. Leading the scoring forPor- tola was Roach with eight points. Junior guard Ida Pruitt knocked down six andBriggs contributed five. The top Tiger rebounders. were Wehrman and Briggs with eight each, Wilbanks with six and Roach w.ith five. On Tuesday, Feb. 8, the Portola girls took on their arch-rival Quincy at home. No scores were available at press time.
