A rocket stove is easy to build. It uses about half the
amount of fuel that other, more traditional "camp" cooking
methods require and it produces more heat. The design is
commonly used in developing countries for cooking, heat-
ing and as a water heater. Art courtesy of charcoalproject, org
Communication
Preparedness
Communication is essen-
tial to preparedness. If
electrical service is dis-
rupted, telephones that
need to be plugged into
an outlet will not work.
Cell ular towers and Inter-
net providers may go of-
fline. Cell phone batteries
soon die. How can you
make sure you can still
receive vital informatio n?
Sire pie telephones that
do not have power cords,
but plug into a phone
line only will continue to
work. Small radios for
your 72-hour pack are
available in every price
range. The radio can be
powered by solar panels
(obviously, they only pro-
vide a charge when the
sun is "shining), hand
cranks, batteries (make
sure to pack extras) or a
combination of the
above. By tuning into
local stations, you will be
able to hear any mes-
sages sent out over the
Emergency Broadcast Sys-
tem, and thus stay infor-
mation about the status
of the
situation.
Consider keeping a list
of local stations near the
radio:
KJDX 93,3 FM
KQNC 81.8 FM
KQNY 91.9 FM
KNLF 95,8 FM
KSUE 1240 AM
KTOR 96.9 FM
Internet resources
The "Preparing and Getting
Trained" section of
redcross.org provides informa-
tion and instructions geared
toward families, workpl aces
and schools. They elabo rate
on "three steps to prepared-
ness: Get a kit, Make a plan,
Be informed."
The ready.gov site is presented
by FEMA, DisasterAssis-
tance.gov and citizen corps.
Three main links on the home
page allow you to access
"Ready America," with infor-
mation for families, "Ready
Business," advising business
owners on preparedness plans
to protect emgloyees and as-
sets, and "Ready Kids," which
uses animal characters and
games~o explain prepared-
ness.
Under "Plan & Prepare" at
fema.gov, preparedness infor-
mation is organized by haz-
ard. They also provide guide-
lines for managing food and
water, pets and livestock, and
effective s helter. A kids' site
called "Get Ready, Get Set ..."
helps get children involved in
preparedness.
