The preparation on the
Spanish Creek Bridge project
has been an impressive
endeavor in itself. A rock face
bordering the road vanished
and steep dirt roadways
appeared, providing vertigo-
inducing paths for a fleet of
construction and digging
equipment.
The Caltrans project recently
ran into a pocket of shale,
a clay-based rock, which
wouldn't break up when
workers drilled into it. This led
to the use of a directional
blast to shatter the rock,
making it easier to remove.

Blaster Ken Kirschenman of Neil's Controlled Blasting was all smiles after pulling off what
Caltrans engineer Ron Collins (not pictured) called "a perfect blast." Kirschenman (right) summed
up his handiwork with two words: "Fun, huh?"
Prep work for the explosion consisted of drilling 40 - 50 holes to the depth of the intended road-
way. The blast was aimed upwards so that the rock would be shattered but the structural in,
tegrity of the surface below wouldn't be affected. Caltrans also dug a "relief hole" for the rubble
to collect in, limiting the amount of cleanup time needed before the crew could reopen the road.

The next phase of the project revolves around the creation of a temporary support structure. The
structure pieces will provide a frame while the concrete bridge Is being formed; later, when
the bridge can support itself, the pieces will be removed. This section of the project is already
beginning to take shape, slowly rising out of the river beam by beam.
The explosive exercise went off without a hitch. The roadway reopened and normal work
recommenced mere moments after personnel announced, "Fire in the holel"
