Reg. 699. orces all Christian Young Staff Writer cyoung@plumasnews.com A fire broke out at Portola City Hall at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, caused by an eruption of a fluorescent light fixture in the reception area of the building. The ex- plosion ignited a fire between the building's insulation and false ceiling, which traveled quickly down the entire length of the building. Fire department and city public works crews were called in as staff members were evacuated. The fire was quickly brought under con- trol and no one was reported injured. Public Works and Building Services manager Todd Roberts will meet with elec- trical and construction con- tractors to estimate the cost of damages and begin repairs immediately. Aspecial emergency City Council meeting was held the same day at 4 p.m., and a de- cision was made by the City Council to open a temporary City Hall at the Williams House Museum until repairs are completed. City Hall is closed while records and office and computer equip- ment are transferred to the temporary facility. The temporary City Hall will be open Monday, Feb. 7, at 8 a.m. The address is 424 E. Sierra Ave. (state Route 70) and the phone number is 832-0671. The City Council, consist- ing of Mayor Dan Wilson, Curt McBride, William Weaver, Juliana Mark and John Larrieu, voted unani- mously to forego competitive bidding on the repairs, which are expected to exceed the city manager's expense authorization of $5,000. They intend to re-open the repaired City Hail building as early as Feb. 14. Oral cancer victim to visit schools Plumas County Office of Education's Prevention Edu- cation Department will host a visit by Rick Bender to Plumas County. Bender is a motivational speaker on the dangers of smokeless (chew) tobacco. Bender will speak on his fight with oral cancer and use his new lease on life to reach the youth of the county.
