What's New In Shoes For You By HELEN WEILL Fashion Editor Oh, me---oh, my--some shoes I'd like to try! But find- ing style and comfort is not a]ways the easiest thing to do. One famous stylist has said, "Shoe styles place fashion at your feet, btt not all shoe de- signers make them comfortable. And there My Lady finds her problem, for shoes are the one piece of wearing apparel that cannot possibly be altered. Had you ever thought of that fact? One may shorten or lengthen slacks and coats but not shoes. In other words once My Lady dons a pair of shoes and has taken them out of the depart- ment, they are her's for good and always. And for that rea- son, wise is the one who makes her shoe plans deliberately. She must know the need for her shoes, and the color combina- tions with which they are to be WOrn. Dashing Shoes Of course, the dashing dress shoes are fun to find, and can be fun to wear, when fitted cor- rectly. Dame Fashion ' designs shoes in beautiful patterns. They fit the foot and complete the wardrobe, and though dancing or spading is. My Lady's plan for the day, her shoes are made for her. The wee shell of a shoe has been a favorite for this winter, and certainly adds litheness and lightness to the foot and ankle. Though with its newness, it has not stolen charm from the stun- ning platform sole. And both may be worn a with the newest new ankle strap that is young in a young sort Of way. Usually the high heeled, ankle strap is the choice in that it is more graceful than a walking heel with the narrow strap. And if on a platfor m , do not be alarmed at the height, Remem- ber that the heel is no higher to stand on, but is reade in propor- tion with the wide platform. But you say, "Oh, I simply can't wear high heels." Dame Fashion would never forget that need, be sure. She decrees a well-balanced heel in the smart spring pump. And for greater dress, how about choosing such a pump in suede witl diamond cutout q.n the vamp, and edged in steel nailheads, or in jet? Spring Dress Suedes, patents, and soft kids THE DE VIL I ,,6v EL DIABLO CANASTA Is a medium for far greater subtlety and skill than regular canasta. And these will be seen in lovely colors such as orange poppy, basque red, and kelly green. Some will be seen in stripes of several dashing bright colors, or pastel shades. Basic black, beige and navys are ap- rearing in new lines for spring, too. Now one more word about or for My Lady, who does not wear high heels, if arch is low or wab- bl31, a platform shoe can prove most comfortable. Though good soft walking shoe with firm sole is a must in every wardrobe, par- ticularly for the gel-who-does- get-around. And though two cars or more are in the porte cochere, needs do arise that de- mand Walking, whether such be for figure or food. Weight of Hose And along with walking hints, let's say that weight of hose is most interesting, and im- portant For shop, ping or walk- ing the practical weight yet, not too sturdy for style, is the 30 denier, 45 gauge. New words, 'tis true, but trained hosiery gels know the strange terminology, and can interrupt with success. For afternoon occasions, and fashion demandS, 30 denier and 51 gauge is ideal. But for after five moments of high fashion and fun, by all means, 15 denier, 51 gauge. And who would ever have be- lieved that there would be excite- ment in something beside weight and color in hosiery? But there is in the fancy new styles that are available right now. Along with choices of such as the new dark seam, we find defi- nite frame heels, embroidered clocks, hand painted designs on the clocks or insteps, dark heels, and the most daring of all-minute designs on but one stocking, probably over the left ankle. These are decorated in wee cut stones, making jewels the thing. As with colors in shoes, there are lovely choices in colors in hose. Usually they are tuned to the shade of the costume My Lady dons. And they may in- clude such as a light natural beige called "Prelude." Soft Medium A soft medium taupe is known as "Ballad." ,Jaunty" is a bright suntan. An adorable shade is "Casual" in iridescent tan beige. "Oasis," true to its name, is a burnished rich brown. "Duet" is a misty gray taupe. Colors galore and names galore make hosiery seIecting fun, but another wee hint is that length enter into the picture. Hose usu- ally are made in three lengths, short, medium, and long. Any one of the three is your's for the asking. Along with that hint is one wee more: That after rinsing hose the foot be strehed, very gently and then hung up to dry or stretched out on a soft towel Thereby hangs a secretg-hose, too, can be too short for My Lady's feet, but can be altered by a gentle stretch. ..Train At Home For Thls WELL PAID PROFESSION:f" S Urgent need for g Practical Nurses. New Kitchen Arrangement Facing Change Designers of the modern kitchen have come around the full cycle, and have decided that grandma really had something, 50 years ago, in her big room with the cook stove. As a result, the homemaker won't work in lonely isolation any more. Advance designs for the 1951 kitchens, reported by the Homemakers' Institute, indi- cate that, although all the won- derful, automatic equipment de- veloped for the American house- wife will be retained, the atmos- phere of the new kitchens will be radically changed. Kitchens next year will do an about-face and return in spirit to an earlier day, when the room in which meals were cooked was also the social gathering place for the entire family and one's friends. The new or remodeled kitchen to fit into the latest theme be- gins with the selection of as many efficient appliances as the budget will allow. Start with an automatic refrigerator, which re- search has proved to be the most essential piece of equipment in the room, and then add a mod- ern range, which does meal prep- aration "thinking" by means of its various controls. Once these working units are situated in the .best scientific lnanner to save steps and time, extras may be planned to make the kitchen a living room in- stead of a cubicle resembling a labortory. The 1951 designs call for anything from period furniture to sink skirts, those ruffled draperies to conceal the pipes of an old-fashioned sink. One designer even included a pot-bellied stove as "atmosphere" to recreate "a period kitchen." Cook Quickly No matter what the vegetable, it will taste better the sooner it is cooked after being harvested. Half an hour may be sufficient to dull the flavor of those that are rich in sugar, which quickly begins to change to starch.
